Media player that supports FLV MP4 AVI.

Anyone know a media player that supports FLV MP4 and AVI? Looking for a cheap bargain.

Would be good if you can provide a brand/model number too! :)

Edit:
Media player for the TV.

  • assuming you want a portable device ?

whatever you do, don't buy a Laser brand player (sold in Kmart/Target/BigW/Myer/Officeworks) — they are very affordable, but equally disappointing, and truly quite unusable, the firmware is utterly plagued with problems. just google if you want some idea, but start with the fact the on/off switch doesn't actually work on most of their models. add to that zero after sales support.

you could go down the Apple iPod path, but they are somewhat expensive and you are forced to use iTunes software to convert your videos, which is a pill to use, and loads your computer with dozens of hidden programs you didn't ask for.

for value and ease of use, you can't go wrong with Creative, Archos, Samsung or Sony for media players.

personally, I would look seriously at a ~7in Android tablet for less money, (eg. http://bit.ly/UMYYr1 $70 inc. Aust. shipping), and there are hundreds of similar models, but they won't suit everyone.

    • Thanks for the reply. I think I should have been more clearer.

I'm looking for a media player for my TV. Media player —-> TV that supports HDMI or the standard video/audio output

  • WD TV Live Streaming (wifi) can be had for under $100. They get discounted regularly, bought one at OW for around $90 a couple of months back.

    http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=330
Supports wifi, ethernet LAN, ext. USB, HDMI.

I'd expect Xmas will bring another round of discounting.

The non-wifi earlier version can be had for $77 at JBHIFI
    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/computer-ac…

Even at full price, either is better than a cheapy as earlier discussed. These are relatively hassle free, play anything thrown at them, supported by firmware and even have apps for android/iOs

    • How's the $77 western digital one you quoted? Saw it on the shelf at jb for the $77.. was hoping to get it just below $70 on bargaining but might not be able to push the envelope. Even at $70-77 how is the quality and playback of files?? Was thinking of getting it for the dad's birthday coming up soon?

Any idea how to support/how I'd connect it to the current LCD - current player he's borrowing connects via the yellow & red etc audio/video in/out of the old playstation days. Thought I saw HDMI claimed.. but can't find a port on the tv?

The jb hi fi link claims a 'composite' cable is included - is that for sound? OR does the HDMI cable connect both sound and video (sorry know nothing about this area)?

Agreed about not going the way of target etc… those things never stretch for quality..

      • Quality is fine. You will not get any better by playing via a PC.

Read the reviews on the JB site. Note this is an older model but don't let this detract from being a unit that would fit your criteria and is very well supported with a broad user base.

Yes, you could pick up a more obscure brand for $20 less…it's not worth the saving…

HDMI - does vision and audio. No other cable required if your TV supports HDMI. If not, composite is fine.

Do not get sucked in by the retailer to pay silly amounts of money for an HDMI cable…search on ebay for an Australian supplier that will post one to you for less than ten bucks.

    • According to the WD website:
      http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/AAG/ENG/4178-705061.pd…

      It doesn't support FLV

Here is a list extracted from the website:
      AVI (Xvid, AVC, MPEG1/2/4), MPG/
      MPEG, VOB, MKV (h.264, x.264,
      AVC, MPEG1/2/4, VC-1), TS/TP/M2T
      (MPEG1/2/4, AVC, VC-1), MP4/MOV
      (MPEG4, h.264), M2TS, WMV9

      • Am fairly confident that it does play FLV files - I know everything I have chucked at it has played fine, have been using it for a good 12 months+. I can double check when I get back home but I am sure if you search the WD forums you should be able to find confirmation.

I do have original version of the WDTV SMP but overall have been very happy with it!

        • Would be great if you can double check :)

        • Any news?
