  • <EDIT> Post Updated, thanks!

    Screen DefinitionFull High Definition
    Screen Resolution1366 x 768

    …………………………

    • Thanks for pointing out, Fixed.

    • Yep definitely 1366 x 768 screen resolution….
      http://www.tclelectronics.com.au/product.asp?pid=85&cid=#spe…
Glad I saw that before I started an argument with the wife for one…. missed the bullet on this one.

PS I thought Full High Definition = 1080p, anything below that is at most just High Definition.

      • Funny.

this is what it says on the link you posted

        Display Resolution

        1366*1768

That looks HD to me ?

  • +2

I have confirmed it is 1080p.
    http://www.tclelectronics.com.au/product.asp?pid=85&cid=

If the model number provided by BigW is right…

    • Where does Big W come into it? HN? It's advertised in the Herald Sun Melbourne. Model number confirmed.

    • From my dreams maybe? :) I still haven't woken up yet, forgive me.

      • +1

LoL! You're forgiven, Scrimmy. In my dreams I have our Jv and Tal in fisticuffs fighting over me in a duel to the dea- .. well, to the first hiccup. ~sighs~ =) ;)

    • -1

Even TCL dont know the specs.

      "Specification
      Display Resolution: 1366*1768"

      WTF :p

  • $297 or $429???

  • +6

Why not pick up a HDMI cable while you're at it?
    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/philips-1-8m-hdmi-cable.html

    • +1

Why not buy a $5 hdmi cable elsewhere?

      • +12

nah, I think I'd prefer a HDMI cable with anti-virus protection, to protect us from all those scary viruses running between our video equipment ;)

        • hahaha!! classic!

        • +1

(Sorry pasted link incorrectly, and it's not letting me edit post.. so here it is again .. the amazing anti-virus HDMI cable.. :) :
          http://www.bigw.com.au/entertainment/video-games-consoles/xb…

        • WOW. Just wondering would be any actual difference other than build quality between $5 cables and this one? Eg pic quality?

        • In a digital signal (like HDMI) there is no possible difference in picture quality, it either works or it doesn't (the 1s and 0s are getting through or they aren't). There is probably a difference in cable build quality, but you could buy $100ish replacement generic cables before you got close to breaking even on this one.

        • An article about this revolutionary cable here ..

      • Dear god…
        It's only a cable!!!

      • +1

        Haahaaa,
Cable costs almost as much as the TV

    • +1

Gerry Harvey should be shot for trying to sell that… is he really that dumb to wonder why the new consumer is is no longer buying this junk in his store….?

    • +1

      +delivery cost: $5.95

Bought my generic 42" with similar specs for $385 exactly 12 months ago. $297 for a 40" is surely a great bargain.

  • Basically , it is same as Toshiba lcd TV . They are a joint venture for LCD TV . It is a good deal .

  • Great price, but I don't need one so will give it a miss :)

I once had a TCL set top box which performed really well, very responsive and quick to change channels, lasted years before I gave it away. If the quality is the same then I'd say it's a good buy.

    • I have a 46" TCL LCD and it's been great. Can't fault it on its picture or build quality.

  • +1

OMG. I have a shitting Soniq SD sitting here and for spare change I can upgrade it for a 1080p… Hard to not grab one

  • I have one of these and it's not too shabby. Worst thing about it is the awful appearance of subtitles. They look just like the blocky teletext ones from back in the day. Other than that no issues.

  • I have one of these too and its pretty good, only problem is weak speakers and the remote is a bit laggy to respond. Great deal!

    • How's the PVR?
The oldies are after a cheap TV which they can pause & record on.

    • Have you tried using Logitech universal remote to fix the problem?

      • I do use a Logitech Harmony 700 with it actually, and it isn't as laggy as the stock remote. Most of the lag is in turning the TV on - quite a delay before the red 'standby' light goes off and the TV comes on.

supabrudda: sorry, I never even knew this TV had a PVR function! I have never used that. It's usually hooked up to my PC and plays DivX files anyway. But it is definitely 1080p.

  • Reckon this would be ok for an outdoor alfresco area?

    • +1

Ok, bugger it. Hard to go wrong for 40" at this price! Thanks OP, Santa's available credit for this year just took a slight hit. Sorry kids. :D

  • When you are usually paying this price for a 32" tv, it's a bit of a bargain.

Don't expect super awesome picture quality or build quality out of it

But this is definitely something you could mount up for the pool room, the bbq area or any casual area for a bit of light watching during the summer i.e the cricket or throw some music videos while having a family bbq

I just bough the ALDI medion LED tv for $259, if i'd have known, I'd have gotten this instead to mount in the outdoor living/dinner area

    • 60 days satisfation garantee.

  • Pretty happy with my $259 medion from Aldi on sale last week.. but for an extra $40 , i dont mind getting the extra 8.5" !! Seems like the specs are pretty much the same.. Confused ..
Edit: Just realised that this is LCD compared to Aldi's LED.. Reckon would be much of a difference in picture quality??
Going from a Samsung Plasma to Aldi's LED, I can see a huge difference in picture quality.. Dont know how it will compare to an LCD.. Please help.. Im really thinking of returning my unit to Aldi and getting this..

    Thanks

    • I'd be happy to pay $40 for 8.5" in total, let alone an extra 8.5 inches. I keep getting emails about it and it costs way more than that.

    • Plasma will kick butt any day of the week.

      Burn more Dolphins i reckon…

  • Great deal, only thing with cheap brand TVA have slow response when changing channels to everything else, if that doesn't bother u, purchase it, can't see anything else bad with this tv.

  • +1

USB PVR is actually one of the most useful things in my house.

  • Nice price can anyone comment how it performs with game consoles and sports??

    • +5

it's terrible at mario kart cos it's got no hands or fingers however it managed to completely shut down an entire 1m x 0.7m area when we used it as the goalie for soccer. It performed poorly at the 200m butterfly event.

  • I'm going to pick one up today, HN is just across the car park from where I Work =).
Will post how it performs and quality, but for $297 I cannnot complain much..

    EDIT:

Like I said cannot complain much, I did however change my mind into NOT purchasing the unit.
There was a display model and HD scene was displaying, too be honest I can see distortion of pixels and lines on the edges of wording or pictures displayed.

I would suggest viewing the actual unit on display before purchasing. That was my final decision made was let down of the quality however still +1 for the size and price.

    • +2

Now I don't know what to do. Some people report 1366 x 768 and others 1080P. You say HD didn't look very good. It would have been good if you checked

1 - If the source was definitely 1080p?

2 - What kind of cable was plugged in and was a splitter used to get the source on to multiple TVs?

2 - If the TV displayed at 1080p regardless of the source? (Pressing Info Button on the TV)

This way we would know for sure!

      • 1 - If the source was definitely 1080p?

I was pretty sure it was, since all other displays was displaying the same video output in HD and all other Panels were much more clearer.

2 - What kind of cable was plugged in and was a splitter used to get the source on to multiple TVs?

I saw a HDMI was plug into the panel at the back which was the only thing plug into it besides the power cord.

2 - If the TV displayed at 1080p regardless of the source? (Pressing Info Button on the TV)

I didnt press any buttons, but it had some sort of display of demo stating its FULL HD.

I guess, its worth your while to just to pop down and visit if only its close by to you.
        Not sure if this helps

  • Does it have built-in digital TV tuner?

    • +5

I want my dad to get this, but he says that 42" tv's will come out at $300, any way to convince him otherwise?

    • +3

he is right. just wait. how long to wait is the question.

      • By the Christmas sales? I dont know if it will, but we'll see

  • If only samsungs where this price, have anyone seen the prices on Bose TVs? It's insane

    • +1

Bose pricing is nothing. Get a price on a Bang & Olufsen beovision 11. starts at $11k most of thier tv's average 25k

  • What kind of panel? TN/IPS?

  • I'm thinking of getting one of these for my dog so he stops watching his filthy porn on my TV. Anybody have any experience with conduit work on kennels?

  • I jumped at it. Picture is worth the $300.

  • Got one as well. Had to adjust the picture quality settings a bit out of the box, but couldn't really go to wrong at that price, especially when it's replacing an old CRT TV. One really annoying thing was installing the base plate - the stand didn't have pre-drilled grooves for the screws to go into, so it just took brute force to screw it in. Speakers aren't that flash, but again, very good for the price.

  • +2

TCL in China is called "太差了"

    • Tai Cha Le = TCL? Hahaha…

  • +1

For less than $297 you could get a beautiful 2nd hand Sony HD widescreen CRT TV with Japanese made picture tube.

    • … a decision you would regret every time you had to move it somewhere.

      • And how often would that be? I had my set in the one position for 9 years before I had to move it.

        • +2

          I've moved 3 times in a 9 year period.

Sorry dude, I just cannot recommend for anyone to choose a CRT box over a flatscreen. It's a good alternative to you, fine, but it wouldn't be for me.

2 different opinions to think on :-)

        • -4

Sounds like you need to stop throwing your money down the drain renting and get around to buying a place :P

    • your likely need to fork out more for a converter box

      • Nope, just hook up your existing Foxtel box and you're good to go. Of course, the one issue is that these CRT sets don't have HDMI so you cannot output HD from the Foxtel box, which unfortunately only outputs SD via component. So if you want HD from One/7Mate etc. you would need a box.

  • +1

Personally I think your better off buying a more energy efficient TV.

Maybe okay for a second TV - but with only a 5 start rating (350Kwh/annum) it might cost you more in the long run. Power prices are only going in one direction.

  • Just bought one and returned today, the RCA output is playing TV channel on the external speaker when I have the dvd player connected to the HDMI port and the TV screen and speaker playing DVD.

  • I'm still waiting on my 32" TCL to arrive at HN from the deal 4 weeks ago.

  • Canceled the order i had in at dse for 32" at $198 and ordered this. Will replace the olds 68cm TCL flat CRT which has performed flawlessly even though it was used as a demo before hand.

  • bought one today, paid another $54 for 2 year extended warranty,5 years all together(I get $50 store credit back by doing that) Any one knows if this TV can be rotated on the TV stand? my one doesn't rotate at all

  • can anyone clear up the resolution thing? I mean it states 1080p but then display Resolution 1366*1768
I'm assuming this means its native resolution is not 1080p but that it will play 1080p content.

(like the ebay sellers of cheap 7" screens do).

    • "Ok, further investigation, I rang up the tcl electronics phone line and talked to a technician there. They said the error was in fact on their TCL website, so the display resolution is actually meant to be described as 1920x1080."

From a whirlpool forums post from early February: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1859559.

Seems TCL still has not updated its website (the detailed specs page, at least). See scrimshaw's post above with the link to TCL's website.

  • cool, right off to harvey norman we go..
    thanks!

    • Are u thinking what I'm thinking? it is Harvey Norman time!

  • i bought a 32inch tcl tv last year at same pric. For me, it's looks like a good deal.

  • Much like "BartholemewH", I cancelled my order for the VIANO 32" TV from DSE (still waiting for a refund though) and opted for the TCL 40" TV from HN. I can confirm everything that has been stated previously. Yes, it displays 1080P correctly. No, the internal speakers are not fantastic, as they miss subtleties (in music, for example) and distort at high volume. Ultimately, it's a great TV for the price.

  • Great now a proud owned.. tried HDMI.. and usb playback on 720P movies. Sound is passable quality. Thats what sound systems are for. (havent tried if it can decode 1080P videos yet.

Slight disappointed it cant recognise mkv files.

Takes about 5 seconds to turn on after you press the power button.

Other than that if i had gotten any larger tv such as a 46". It would probably needed delivery.. and thats another $50 bucks ontop.

  • got the additional 2 years warranty for $58. Usually think they're a scam but they claim a total of 5 years replacement. Cant grumble

  • bought one for my father inlaw. they had blueray movie playing instore on display model and i was quite impressed with picture quality. i have set it up at home and watched some digital chanels and picture quality is ok

40" full hd tv for under $300 with 3 year warranty is definately good deal..

  • Bought 1 today. Too late to cancel the 32" $199 from DSE. Will see which one is better and refund the other. Might keep both 1 for my bedroom and 1 for my son's bedroom.

  • if this tv is full HD I will eat my shorts. I just hooked it up to my computer. windows recommends 1368x768, switching to 1920x1080 gives a gnarly re-sampled picture. connected via hdmi.

  • also warranty card states 2 year warranty. whatsthe story there?

    • Well it could be a typo on HN behalf.. going to contact them soon to see if they will honor the 3 years warranty as they have advertised it as such. Anyway it appears they been offering 3 year warranty in Australia for a while on their tvs.

  • Keep the post-bargain-buying HONEST reviews coming in, I'm sitting on the fence about buying one and need to be pushed one way or the other!

  • I'm quite happy with it.

Bought one for my gf and the quality is pretty good.

I might be biased though as I'm comparing with my panasonic 4-5 year old plasma which isn't 1080p

Watching digital tv on this set compared to my set is simply phenomnal, colours pop out and pretty sharp.
(Again maybe bias coming from my old plasma)

Channel switching is a bit slow, and it takes about 3-4 seconds for the tv to turn on like everyone has said. but if you can live with this, 297 for a full hd set that can record tv shows to USB, and play movies from a usb stick is pretty phenomenal

You just need to pump the volume button a bit higher for action movies.

Thinking of ditching my old plasma for this one if the deal hasn't expired!!
