Yeah with all the avalanche of DMCA takedown noticed for UseNet groups (not just index sites) are making its future questionable, especially buying large blocks of data. But it is only $40

    • +1

Tell me about it, I bought 4 years of megaupload premium, 3 weeks before it got shut down.

      • .

    • I rarely have issues with my supernews + astraweb combination. The astraweb block account lasts a very long time if you use it as a backup account as well.

      • Yeah but what do you use for indexing?

        • +1

There are heaps, here are a few…

DOGnzb is my primary used with sickbeard etc
          Fanzub for Anime
Binsearch is my primary raw indexer

          Raw search:
          Binsearch
          NZBclub
          NZBindex
          NZB listings
          Usenet binary

Others I have just in case:
          NZB.su
          Nzbsrus
          omgwtfnzbs
          GingaDaddy
          NZBs.in

And then there's a few forum style sites as well.

Why would you list these for…why!? Least you didn't list my primary, not that it would mater with reg/invites locked.

        • Its ozbargain, these sites are already listed on much bigger international sites.

Also is your primary nzbs.org? If not I wonder what it is…

        • Half of those sites are down by the way.

        • I'm not sure what your trying to access, but as of right now 100% of the sites i mentioned are up and running.

Edit: Actually since posting this gingadaddy has shutdown due to legal reasons…. Scary.

        • You can reach NZB.su?

        • +1

Yes, you need to use nzb.su/login or /welcome.

        • nzb.su - So far as I can tell they're no longer taking registrations

    • Can anyone recommend a Usenet server that hasn't been impacted by DMCA?

Indexing is easily sorted but missing blocks is a bigger problem right now.

      • Set up your account to accept PMs.

      • Even the .nl sites are removing articles as well.

        • Why would they care? Isn't DMCA an American thing?

          Or am I missing something?

People stop talking about UseNet!! It's continually postings like this that have killed it. Stop helping people and let them keep using torrents.

    • UseNet is one of the biggest advertising clients for torrent websites. Most people who torrent would know what usenet is…

      • +3

They may know about it, but historically it's always been harder to set-up in contrast to torrents, so many still opt for the easier option.

That is, however, until it starts becoming more and more mainstream (read: getting posted to OzB on a monthly basis these days). That makes people start considering it more of an option and taking the time and effort to install and configure.

More mainstream = more DMCA takedowns issued = more sites/serves going down due to rise in costs, etc.

Thing is, it's the same guy every time, with an affiliate link…

  • just use http its free or really cheap
alldebrid is what $15 for half a year or so ?

    • Takedowns on http are something like 75%

Usenet has barely any takedowns if you use a good combination of providers.

  • http://wiki.sabnzbd.org/nzb-sources for a list of indexing sites. It seems pretty up to date although a few are now closed to new registrations.

    • Do you use one? any recs or invites ;) I was with nzbmatrix rather a sad panda today

    • edited a request that others saw in an unfavourably manner (fair enough)

    • -5

Seriously. Stop it. Let people find the info/invites themselves.

      • I am one of the people that CBF setting up usenet. I am happy with torrents as a try before you buy system. It's rare that I can't find something with a decent D/L speed on either TPB or warez-bb (The latter is a little less effective after the neutering of Rapidshare).

Besides, judging by the sooking of some of the users of usenet here, it doesn't sound like I would want to be part of such a community anyway. Such a sense of entitlement to your pirated material. But you're probably just using it for Linux distros…

EDIT: I didn't actually mean to put this comment as a reply to your comment, PainToad. But it'll do.

They really should ban people asking for invites….and not just here

    • +2

So first you dismiss usenet as having questionable future and then you suggest banning people asking for invites… What are you doing in this discussion in the first place?

      • -7

You don't get it, and it's the fact that people like you suddenly want to use UseNet is the problem. Go away.

        • +2

What are you talking about? I have been using Usenet for years. (happy to continue this discussion in a PM)

        • +1

I don't mind people wanting to use it. Only not via methods that google monkeys can get a hold of…

Get on IRC and if you're fair dinkum people will only be glad to help!

        • +2

Are you the new internets gatekeeper toad?

        • +1

Whats the matter? Worried you will have a harder time downloading copyrighted content? I know it's sad that you might have to pay for it legally in the future :(

      • nope Usenet will exist for a long time, it's just some of it's content, especially the content that requires large blocks of downloads that might have a limited future.

As for the asking of invites, it appears that every thread discussing usenet (espeically index site replacements) has been hijacked by kiddies requesting invites….rathering then wade through 32 pages (& counting) of mostly "give me an invite"

  • +2

At this stage, there may be not much point using US-based public services.

    http://newsgroupdirect.com/policies/dmca.php

    • Hard to know yet though, things are mostly fine at the moment.

      • If you call shows getting pulled within an hour "fine", sure.

  • Still no paypal….

    • Actually, probably a good thing, doesn't look like signing up is worth it atm! Not with all the DMCA takedowns and all these NZB sites getting shut down!

  • with providers and indexers closing left right and centre, it's just not worth it.

  • If anyone has an invite to one of the private sites, I'd be happy to pay a small fee as the kids are driving me mad!!!!

  • sucks just paid for matrix as well any alternatives? thing have been missing files recently just after 10 min uploads

    • Like what?

      Assuming its not UFC…

      • ufc dmca take down is automated so count that out but just random files that are under 30 days old. The older files seem to be ok but just the recent files there has been more missing files. Seems like Usenet is being more targeted now.

        • Thats why you automate it with Sickbeard/Couch Potato.

Movies have enough regular uploads that I've never had a problem.

UFC is easy to get if you make the download automatic.

Problem is it is quite hard at the moment for new users to find an indexing site that allows api access.

        • so what you are saying is it's quite hard for new users to use Google to find what they need.

  • Sorry, too many missing blocks on this Highwinds provider. I would recommend going to another provider with all the DMCA takedowns occurring especially in the states.

    • I use another Highwinds provider and have not come across too many missing blocks. Anyway do you have better concrete suggestions?
