490

You can travel free on Victoria’s public transport network from first to last service on Christmas Day (25 December 2012) and after 6pm on New Year’s Eve (31 December 2012) until the first normal scheduled service on New Year’s Day (1 January 2013).

On New Year's Eve, metropolitan trains, trams and NightRider buses will run all night to get you home. Trains and trams will run to a normal weekday timetable with extra services to and from the city.

There will be free travel on V/Line services that arrive in, or depart from, Melbourne after 6pm on New Year’s Eve. There will also be free travel on the first service departing Melbourne on each line on New Year’s Day.

On free travel days, metropolitan ticket barriers will be open at all stations. Customers who accidentally touch on with a myki won’t be charged a fare.

V/Line passengers who accidentally buy tickets can apply for a refund.

Customers who accidently validate their Metcard are not entitled to a refund.

Enjoy the freebies while you can. Public transport fares will rise from January next year.

      January 1 in fact!

    •

But the freebies are annual (since 2004/5*) and the fare rises are virtually annual too!

I thought this has been the norm for the last few years - nothing new!

    •

Well, you never know what's gonna happen next year.

  •

Surprised not free all the time, the service they provide is a third world standard at first world prices. Good on ya metro, how's about instead of investing money in poor marketing, invest in having a reliable service.

    •

      Disagree.

You want third world? Come to Sydney.

Melbourne transport is way better incomparison.i

      •

Have you tried it? You can't get on the public transport unless you fork out $6 for myki. No concept of daily tickets here….

Although metro may not be 100% reliable depending on the train line really, people should know the revenue from ticket sales only contributes 1/3 of total funding as the rest is funded by the state government in Victoria. We should think the fares we pay are quite reasonable compare to Sydney. Happiness is always about comparison.

If it's anything like Translink here in Queensland, the majority of funding is probably going to pen pushing public servants.

    •

Only pays 1/3 as it is run by the state, could be run much more efficient if fully privitised and conpetition was allowed.

  •

Yay, free bus to the Airport. Sadly no bus out once I get to Perth.

    Adelaide does this every year…

good to know so as to get train in and see fireworks……

Sweet, sick of getting ripped of by myki, anyone else had problems with them? Keep getting over charged ($9.90 per day rather than the $6.60 that's if I tag on more than twice). The ad about it being $3.30 all day travel on Saturdays and Sundays is bs as well it always charges me more…

    •

Have you tried the mykileaks online analyser?

    •

I've only been to Melbourne a couple of times, but it's pretty easy to sneak on and not pay, isn't it?

I know a girl who got away with it for saying she wasn't a local when caught by the inspector.
