Cheapest US mail forwarder?

We've listed a heap of US mail forwarders here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/list_of_mail_forwarders

Anyone know which one offers the cheapest (but still reliable) service?

I had a scan over some of the websites listed. Price USA seems reasonable and easy to deal with.

Anyone care to chime in on this discussion?

Updates. I'll put links to shipping calculators here and add to them as I go along.

  • I have used only comgateway in the past. Affordable, and good customer service.

had a look - very expensive IMO

$29 usd for 500gm then $4.70 for the next 500gm

  • can we for example tell them what we want to buy (product link on amazon for example)_and then get free quote of what the shipping cost to australia would be?
im interested to get weber smokey joe bbq from amazon, some very cheap but cant ship here

  • Weight is the killer and I imagine a BBQ would cost hundreds of dollars to post.

    • this is the portable version ie 50-55cm in diameters i think not too heavy (not the 4 burners one!!) :)

    Try http://www.usglobalmail.com/
Never tried it myself but intending to in the next few days, they have got pretty good reviews. If you know the weight of the item you're intending to get there's a quote calculator on the website. :)

    • The annoying thing about some services is that they make you sign up for membership ($15 a month etc). Seems like USGlobal Mail makes you do this to?

  • Some bloke on another thread recommended http://www.borderlinx.com/

This wasn't on the Wiki here.

  • Could it be cheaper if you have someone on the USA side sending it? Or is this what you're on about?

I have family over there, and would like to know what the cheapest shipping company to use.

  • Any one have any recommendations or good comparisons to offer from experience?

  • Probably myus.com, they offer good discount on delivery for customers registered using amex and visa card, you can search the post before. They do not charge membership fee and also consolidation fee, which is also good.

I have used these guys http://www.usashoppingaffair.com.au/prices.html and thought the shipping price wasn't too bad. Amazon lists dimensional weight so is easy enough to calculate.

I have tried to use comgateway but couldn't get a shipping estimate which made me nervous it would be expensive.

    • best shipping price i have seen, cheers

      • The USA Shopping Affair looks a little basic…wouldn't say it's suss but they look like a small operation. Rates are clearly outlined (which is a great thing). I think it's a single-person business.

I'll give them a go after I see how Borderlinx goes. I just used them and am waiting for package costs. Once I get that, I'll do a comparison with USA Shopping Affair.

  • So these companies ship without needing friends etc. to intervene? Could you get it cheaper if you had people in the USA who could take the item/s to say DHL/UPS etc. and ship it that way?

I've heard speak of a "bag/sack" that can be bought for a set price, and then you can fill it to a weight limit. Kinda like our express post bags. Anyone know anything about this? I'd like to find out more, but can't seem to find any more info…

    • Yes - they give you an address which you put in as your own when you purchase. They then hold your items until you confirm everything has arrived and are ready to group together and ship.

    • Friends and family wouldn't have access to the commercial shipping rates big mailforwarders/comapnies have. So its generally better to go with these mail forwarding companies.

Friends and family come in handy when merchants are really strict and dont ship to some mail forwarders.
