Seagate Expansion 3TB USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive - $100.00 @ JB Hi-Fi
This was posted 4 months 26 days ago, and might be an out-dated deal
Managed to snare one of these for $100 at Forest Hill, VIC
So the story goes like this:
Saw the other deal posted at $118.40 and decided to head to Nunawading. None in stock so the guy checked the system for nearby stores. Glen Waverley and Forest Hill were showing 4 each, so popped down to Forest Hill.
Got into the store, none on shelf so asked if they had any. He comes back with one and I asked him how much
"With the 20% off it comes down to $118.40"
Can you do any better?
"I could drop it down to $110 for you"
How about a hundred bucks?
"<umms and arghs> yeah I can do it"
Great, thanks!
Paid. Receipt attached. Enjoy!
Price beat at OW who've smartened up and dropped it to $118.40 to avoid beating it 5%
Mod: Note that there are conflicting reports on whether this is a price for a new hard drive or repackaged. Some have been able to pricematch and some haven't.
Mod: FYI: Receipts have always been able to be posted as deals. Price errors get moved to forums. As of 8PM 29/12, the information is conflicting.

And you call yourself an Ozbargainer :P

+10 votesI'm glad you were able to negotiate and I reckon you got the best deal in Australia, however I don't think this is a deal as there's no guarantee of replication. Probably a low chance in fact. IMO this should have been posted in the existing thread:
+14 votesI'm sorry. I thought posting receipts were okay based on what I've seen on here in the past:
http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/87014
http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/86305Yes there's no guarantee, but JB are known for being haggle-friendly and I'm posting because I hope my receipt can help others around Australia get the same (or better if they price beat at OW) deal.
+5 votesFair point, but the reality is that this is now similar to a competition, there is an element of luck, some may get this price, but the majority of people will be made to look like fools by JB staff, who in most cases are fools themselves.
But excellent price. Well done, and thanks for sharing.
+3 votesProspectiveDarkness on 29/12/2012 - 17:27 ¶The degree of discount comes into it too; this is substantially cheaper than even the best deals on here… I'd give it a snowflake's chance in hell of being replicated (and judging by other responses, that's about right). If it were $10 cheaper than the lowest sale price, there would be a far greater chance of replication, and hence would represent a better deal.
Thanks for posting, anyway, and congratulations on your bargain HDD.
+1 votecould be, I bought one online and picked up at Broadmeadows JB, the guy went back and gave me one. the package was wrapped like a new one, when I back home, found the actual case has been opened and the Hard drives has been used and formatted!!!! Went back the next day ask for a swap, the other guy didn't ask me any question and gave me a new one from the shelf. Very DODGY!!!!
+4 votesFrozensage on 29/12/2012 - 14:02 ¶I bought 2 for 125 after talking my ass off and then 2 days later it was 118 so I bought another one last night and now this??? I give up!

chansthename on 29/12/2012 - 14:30 ¶Basically if you work at JB (which you do by the sounds of it) you should tick the rep box (just for the sake of it, you can state in your post that you are only a lowly employee if you'd like)
+20 votesrep = representative = representative of the company
worker = worker = works for the place
if the guy does not have authorisation by the company to represent the company (officially speak on the companys behalf) then he us just an ozbargainer like the rest of us. to me it just sounds like a guy that did us a favour by looking up some info he had available.
or should every OzB'er have to declare they are a rep for the company when they simply made a comment on a deal?
(if they post a deal thats different, and they should indicate that they work for the company they are posting the deal from, even if they arent officially representing the company)
+6 votesI don't have permission but I am not doing anything wrong by trying to help you guys out.
indeed, thats what motivated me to comment in the first place. and as you can see by the votes, most people appreciate your efforts.
i think i can safely speak on behalf of most OzB'ers and offer you a collective thanks :D
+1 voteActually on OzB rep = staff as well.
well of course
all reps will be staff
not all staff are reps
hover your mouse over the "rep" title and it clearly states "posted by a store representative"….. in other words… someone thats officially representing the store…. this guy isnt officially representing the store… in fact he isnt representing anything other than he just works there.
what would management think about this guy claiming to be an official representative?
+2 votesIt's a touchy subject, I posted about it in the site suggestions to maybe have it changed so that workers can say they work there, as opposed to representing the company. If someone does represent the company, then they could also declare that. The way it currently is is a little confusing, as by OzB rules, even a checkout chick would have to claim to represent their store, even though their employment conditions say they are not able to post on the internet representing the opinion of their employer (and must post a disclaimer).
It's all a bit fuzzy, really.

Just so we're clear: I agree with you but the (current) OzB guidelines say you should declare if "associated" with the company.
I see you have done that so I have no issue?
And yet I still get negged by 10 ppl for pointing out the rules….No wonder ppl arenr't game to come on here!

"if "associated" with the company."
but thats the point, he isnt "associated" with the company, he is just pleb (a worker there, no offence intended just trying to make a point). IMO to be classed as "associated" you would need to be authorised or in some form of management position and have an official business voice
have you stopped to think that maybe this persons parents/siblings/kids/friend/partner/pet elephant is the one that works for the company and he simply made a call to the person working there to ask them what cost was?
and if i wasnt already out of negs you would have been negged by me for being the one that pointed it out in the first place, guy helps out the community and the first comment is someone jumping down his throat for it. give the guy a break. if you never pointed it out in the first place trying to claim some sort of glory this whole thread would never have happened.

Lol, I think that you're already out of negs sums it up nicely.
I think the rep tag is confusing and might need a rethink, but I imagine it is set up to avoid, or at least declare, a possible conflict of interest. However, as it stands, it is not reserved for those "authorised" by the company, but those that have an "association" with it, ie an employee. You're entitled to your IMO, but that is not the definition in use at OzB at the moment: which clearly states that you work for the store when you check the box
The fact that he said "our floor cost, just checked" made me leap to the conclusion that he worked there and he himself had some "association" with the company.
And if "So where is your rep tag?" is jumping down his throat, then you should get out more. I already stated above that I have no issue since he added the tag, so where's the glory? His comment was useful, the rep tag was added appropriately, so what's the problem again?
-1 votethelastnoob on 29/12/2012 - 14:52 ¶good price but please be aware that it is a potentially extremely unreliable drive

see the rating and comments and use caution if files are important (photos, documents etc)
+1 voteannoynimous on 29/12/2012 - 17:27 ¶it is ok but make sure you don't network share the entire drive …
+1 voteThat's the old model.
The new one (which is the one JB currently has advertised at $118) has better user reviews:http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STB...
+1 voteNot true…
His receipt indicates.. via the JB model number.. that it is infact the newer model…

Check the SKU on his receipt.. in the catalogue….
+4 votesI like these deals being posted. I was able to use receipts from this deal http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/87014 to buy the nexus 7 32gig for $215, as did others.
+3 votesJB Forest Hill, VIC (same store) refused to honour the deal for a brand new, sealed one. I was able to still find 2 brand new ones on the shelf.
The staff I talked to said he sold that $100 one and that one was a repacked. He also made a comment about the OP (which I will not repeat it here).
+3 votesThe staff told me he was the one who sold it. I did not ask him whether he was the one who approved the $100 deal. He elected to tell me all that information (i.e. he sold a repacked one to the OP for $100). All I did was show him a copy of the receipt and asked for the same deal.
+2 votesOh wow. I'm not sure what you've been by the staff there and I'm sorry they refused to match their own price for you. Like I said, I managed to snap one up at this price (luckily, as it may turn out) and it was a new drive.
We're a community here and I want what everyone here wants - a bargain. I would not waste my and everyone else's time by posting something if I knew they had no hope of matching.
Ozbargain has been good to me and the intention was to give a little something back.
I'm sorry you were refused a price match. I'm glad you got some entertainment from whatever names the salesperson called me.
+5 votesThat's why I did not want to post what the JB staff said. I wasn't there when you made the purchase.
So you bought a brand new, sealed drive for $100?
Also, I was definetely able to find brand new, sealed ones when I was at the store.
The whole point of posting a deal is for other people to be able to get it. If there is only 1 available, then the deal shouldn't be posted.
+1 voteYes, it was a new drive.
Whether the drives were out the back or were on the shelf is irrelevant and I'm not going to get wound up arguing over it. When I walked into the store, there was none there. I asked for it and they got me one. I think it's reasonable to expect a salesperson would restock the shelf once brought to his attention there is none on display. Stock don't sell sitting out the back :) Are we forgetting netsurfer went in several hours later?
Another poster has gotten this drive for less than the advertised $118.40
Yes, it wasn't $100 but it was less than advertised which clearly shows JB have room to move. How much is up to the salesperson.
+8 votesi think some people are missing the point. you posted in good faith and for you there was nothing out of the ordinary to your purchase and expected that anyone else should also be able to just walk in and get the same deal.
on top of that, some have used this "deal" to get themselves even cheaper than the already very low shelf price as well. maybe not quite as lucky as you but cheaper all the same.
dont sweat the details dude, haters gonna hate no matter what your gonna do. your vote count tells a story and i for one stand by my +1 ive given.
+7 votesSo far…
- A person who worked at JB checked the price in the system and reported $100 is below the cost price. He couldn't understand why a staff would allow it.
- Unable to find another person managed to get a brand new, sealed one for $100.
A deal with 59+'s and counting should be something that multiple people can get.
I don't want people to waste their time, thinking they can get the same deal.
+9 votesFrozensage on 29/12/2012 - 16:37 ¶Why is this getting so much plus when it can't be matched and its not even a new drive by the sounds of things.
-2 votesVoting guidelines:
"Please vote positive if you feel the deal is good. This encourages the poster to share more deals as they know its appreciated."So if you're positive voting because the deal is good then I'll make sure I tell you next time i'm able to negotiate a deal which probably no one can replicate.
+4 votesThis isn't a deal as it was second hand,
I managed to haggle down to "$110 for a new drive, I've attached a receit for you to take to Officeworks http://imgur.com/SxPVm.jpg
+1 voteWorkAround on 29/12/2012 - 18:08 ¶:( Officeworks at Alexandria wouldn't match a receipt. Going to go down to JB HiFi at Broadway tomorrow I guess. Sorry to ask, but do you remember the name of the salesperson you spoke with to get the hard drive down to $110? :o Cheers.

+1 voteHe was speaking of the original post, not yours.
The OP got theirs cheap as it seems that it may not have been a brand harry spanker despite what they think they got, so they dumped it below cost to make it go away.
You however haggled yours down to a price where there was still some margin in the sale which means yours is more likely to result in a pricematch where it's not at all likely anyone will be able to get one for the same price as the OP as not every store is going to have used or seal broken units they need to shift.
+2 votesmadturbo123 on 29/12/2012 - 18:07 ¶Thanks for the receipt. I got OW browns plain to phone local jb and they were more than happy to price match and beat by 5%. So please ignore neg votes and continue to post deals. Thanks
