Linear actuators - best place to buy

Any geeks around?

Looking to buy one or two linear actuators to build a back lifting mechanism for a bed. Also need a wired remote control
switch to trigger them. For reasons too complex to explain, can't use normal bed lift mechanisms.

Linear actuators need to travel about a foot, and need to lift a weight of about 20kgs.

Anyone know a good supplier (other than eBay)?

  • My best thought is to look at getting a tilt garage door opener that you can hack up for this purpose. If you can make it work I doubt you will find cheaper.

  • would the automatic gate openers do the job. They have remotes and they lift heavy weights too.

  • have you have a look at the usual electronics distributors? RS, Farnell (now 24element I think), digikeys… I know their prices are not always the cheapest, but sometimes for odd items, they do have really good prices.

  • Thanks for the tips - I'll take a look at the garage door motors, but it doesn't seem like it'll work for what I need - too bulky. tio, thanks for the distributor names - exactly what I needed.

  • ebay is great for these sort of parts (know you said besides ebay but really does make it easy to find/purchase this stuff!)
    eg.

  • Another place to check out is www.progressiveautomations.com , good prices and customization options available.
