Puff Braddy on 04/01/2013 - 14:55 ¶Bought for this price MEL>LA direct for dates in May around a fortnight ago. Great price.
Puff Braddy on 04/01/2013 - 15:03 ¶A quick look at my booking and yeah, I got $1077 too. Whoops!
Give in to your temptation :)
Here's an example I just tried.
Melbourne to Los Angeles
Depart Thursday 7th March $573.33
Return Thursday 4th April $503.85When you input the dates, click the button that says you're flexible with dates so it will bring up more dates around your input date. It will highlight the cheapest fares.

+1 votesoakwashrinsespin on 04/01/2013 - 16:16 ¶Delta flies their own planes ("metal") to Australia, too — DL16 (SYD-LAX) and DL17 (LAX-SYD). I wouldn't recommend them over Virgin, though! :)
+1 voteSteveBuscemi on 04/01/2013 - 16:20 ¶Yep, I've been moved from VA1 to DL16 when a connecting flight changed. Way worse experience.
+4 votesYou can pay by BPAY before midnight on the same day as booking if you are not travelling in the next 10 days. If you want to travel in the next 10 days just call them and explain that and they will waive the fees. (I'm not a Virgin Australia spokesperson, just work there)
alwayseric on 04/01/2013 - 16:19 ¶when is the good time to book flights to say salt lake (via la) for next february? thinking of skiing there.

+1 voteJoining velocity was the best move I ever made in terms of travel. Booking international flights with virgin nearly nets my fiancee and I enough points to get us to Syd airport from CBR which is great :D
I'm not regularly fussed about these point systems, however, just by booking SYD -> LAX we earned about 11,000 points, plus 2000 points with our virgin credit card. We earned 20,000 bonus points just by applying for the credit card which was more than enough to get us a few CBR -> SYD flights.

Yep, already with velocity as silver. Earning most of my cc points against westpac and also QFF at present, but heading across to a virgin association in the next few months. Just to confirm, was there was a free domestic at some stage though, maybe only for Asia routings?
+3 votesTip. Pair arrive/depart from San Diego with either New York, Boston and a few other possible cities and its around $1100. Very cheap way to get to the eastern seaboard
(You can't book this with through virgin website. So play with the dates on ITA Matrix and book with Kayak, etc

Virgin australia of course (with code shares of partner airlines for us domestic legs)
Basically the Idea is if San Diego is involved it allows you to set some other cities including those in the east coast for the same price as San Diego return (which is nearly the same price as LAX return)
Example is Brisbane to San Diego on march 10th, returning from Boston on April 15th for $1120.
I believe this means by the way you also get Virgins 46 kg luggage from the east coast which is great to carry the shopping home
It's a weird peculiarity with the rules which I found entirely by a fluke. And it only works with San Diego
+8 votesMassive thanks to you Chthonic (O.P.) my wife and kids are in LA for 6 weeks, I couldn't get the whole time off work but after looking at this the price was too good to pass up ($315 for a Return Syd to LAX flight after using my points), outstanding. I've booked and will surprise them for the last two weeks.
Thank you !!!
+1 voteHi MrZ, the best fare in business from MEL is currently $6229 to LAX or $6243 to SFO, SEA or LAS. The list of fares can be found here Those prices are for travel departing between now and 31 March but you can probably find similar prices for later in the year too. For business class it definitely pays to book further in advance as most of the best specials have a 50 day advance purchase rule.
