  • Worth a stab at my local OW

  • Here's the unlock I personally haven't tested. Any confirmation would be great.

The video says how to key in the unlock code, not how to get the unlock code. So, hardly useful

Apologies, was about 5am when I posted. Chalk 1 up for late night loopyness :)

You do know you can recycle phones and you should right??

      • I know I should but I just can't stand having to pay money for someone else to make money off me by refurbing my phone and selling it on.

    • +11

And you do know this phone is $9 ?

    • +10

Windows 6? I reckon that it is on the same level as this phone.

      • Bugger that at least get some cash if you CBF Ebaying it http://www.mazumamobile.com.au

        • mine is worth $0. do i win?

        • Is yours a touch screen with wifi and windows 6?

      • -6

nah too risky, i don't want some poor homeless guy going over his cap and then being stuck with a $1000 bill. oh wait you need an address to have a phone plan. besides you can't eat a phone! unless you have a blendtec

        • +1

You didn't actually look at any of the links, did you? And there is always pre-paid.

BargainHaggler - Thanks for that. I am getting a new phone soon, and want to donate/recycle my current one. Good work.

spoiler alert: it was a joke

    • +7

Was your phone $9? If not, shut up.

  • so cheap. does that mean this phone can only work with Telstra sim?

    • +1

It's a Telstra prepaid, so will most certainly be locked to their network.

    • Telstra service provider only, not even resellers :(

These are a great basic phone. Excellent standby/talk time.
    Bargain at $9

I've have this phone as my everyday carry-around mobile for about a year now. Picked it up last time it was on special. They're simple, but they're good. Goes for about 5 days between charges, audio quality is good, and the menus are responsive and easy to use.

  • How much for unlock?

    • +2

      usually $100.

  • +2

I have still got one of these somewhere. If all you want to do is make phone calls it had great reception. It was one of their blue tick phones(or green I cant remember). It cost me $27 to unlock it but I had it for about 3 months at that stage. Worked well in New Zealand without downloading $1000's worth of overseas data.

Walter White approves of this deal…

  • Wetherill Park, NSW
    Carlton, NSW
    Nowra, NSW

all claiming to have limited stock

    • Nada, Nil, None

Called, none of those have. Staff probably took them?

      • "Limited Stock" likely to = 1 which is either an ex-display or faulty. I know the Carlton one is a faulty ex-display.

  • A search for this item at stores near 'Adelaide SA 5000, Australia' shows that this item is not in stock at any store within 500 kilometres.

    • You would travel 500kms for a $9 mobile!? Kudos to you for your dedication to all things bargain! :)

      • 500km is the default search radius

I was working in a huge tin shed and my Voda HTC has no reception. Pop a Telstra SIM in I have intermittent reception between 1 to 2 bars. I then got this from OW, $29 at the time and I have at least 4 bars and most of the time 5 bars!
The best part is there were heaps of these around in my OW store and I was able to take one with an easy to remember phone number, which costs $30 or more from other telco.

The Sony Ericsson Cedar is a Telstra blue-tick phone.

    • the Telstra firmware it comes with is worse than unbranded firmware (not surprising). You used to be able to get pure Sony firmware from wotanserver.com for free. I believe that they don't offer it anymore for free.
    • the box that you get it in says it has wi-fi when it hasn't
    • it is a very good phone with somewhat low loudspeaker performance (you won't get loud music/mp3 playback or phone loudspeaker performance)
    • in general, the GUI is excellent
    • It comes with a MicroSD slot so you can easily load a MicroSD for cheap and just use it as a Walkman, but you MUST have a SIM in it; it will be practically useless without a SIM.
    • you cannot swith to airplane mode without a reboot, which is dumb
    • the back casing is prone to damage and scratches since it has silly silver paint on the back and is rounded with no protection from damage.
    • it does come with a fabric 'sleeve' to protect it from dust and scratches when charging or whatever, but this is really a fabric case with visible 'porous' holes. Not some heavy duty thing. Thin material and I only put the phone in there when charging on non-soft surfaces.
    • battery life could be better considering this class of phone (non-smart)
    • 360p mp4 videos will play but not without frame losses (jerkyness). Only really usable in landscape mode.
    • plays MP3s and WAVs and AAC files fine; ideal as cheap walkman with MicroSD card.
    • again, the GUI really is well-designed and it is well-featured.
    • voice dialling is done well like most SE phones (if you can hear the speaker properly as it plays back your voice)
    • no option to completely take off Facebook and other social parasites without unbranded firmware.
    • over-all, at this price, the phone really is good value, but that good value is mitigated by the fact that the Telstra firmware sucks compared to unbranded firmware and you MUST have a SIM card in the phone to do anything useful with it and the fact that the speaker is not as loud as you'd expect.

    I hope that helps someone.

    • I was about to ask if it was 'blue tick' approved, thanks! Looking at buying this for my grandmother who lives in the country.

      • It should do decently.

Telstra firmware will make it easier to accidentally spend money (they've designed it that way) but it should do good.

Another thing is you won't be able to search the Calendar for past appointments.

If she uses it as a Walkman, there are some caveats which I forgot to mention:
        * you cannot make playlists sanely from the MicroSD card (maybe she won't be doing that; this was a big disappointment to me)
        * you cannot repeat a track repeatedly (yep…)

I'm assuming that Sony likes to protect their higher-priced phones and Walkmans, probably.

    • what a lying box (about the wifi)

gsmarena specs confirming no wifi —> http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_cedar-3404.php

      • +1

Yeah, I bought mine last year and it came in a normal Telstra box on the outside; you open that up to reveal the Sony Ercisson box (with the phone inside it). It's on this box that the "Wi-Fi Certified" thing is printed.

Dumb mistake by Sony Ericsson or otherwise: I dunno. But I haven't seen many people advertising it as such so no major drama. Just extra ink on the box but can be deceptive to those who buy it unlocked and showing like that.

Called both Kew East and Maribyrnong Officeworks (only stores in Vic showing with stock) and was told that there now aren't any available in Victoria, and that they will be taking it off the website soon.

    • I can confirm Maribyrnong is out, I was there 40 mins ago. I guess I should have called.

  • I was at Nowra NSW at 8.00am.

    No stock

  • So did anyone actually get one??? It should named "OUT OF STOCKS" as there are probably 1-2 stores available in Australia

  • Stopped by at Kew East, Victoria after work as it was showing stock on their website. Nothing there. Waste of time.

It does not look like anybody actually got one from this deal.

  • This is basically an upgrade K800i. Which used to cost like $600 8 years ago. Good quality. Lasted 3 years for me.. and 1 year more when i gave it away.

  • No stock in Melbourne since late last year with this phone. I was looking for this before Christmas when it was priced at $9 too, but could not locate any stock. Managed to find onr at my local IGA for $29. I have still seen 1 or 2 of these floating around at various IGAs.
