Best Star Alliance program?

I'm Qantas gold, but work have put me on Star Alliance for my trip to Africa. I'm not in Star Alliance and I would hate to loose the points, do what is the best Star Alliance program to join to make some use of the points?

I've been told Krisflyer is OK

  • I'm with Krisflyer, went on an extended round the world trip only to discover that Silver got you nothing much excepting a shiny card and the points weren't enough for anything good. Heard good things about Lufthansa's program though.

    • How do you use your Krisflyer points?

      • Same way you use your QFF Points…Anyways, unless you keep travelling with Star Alliance, your status and points will expire quite quickly. A business class trip from Oz to Africa return won't get you enough points even for an award flight from Sydney to Singapore one way. You can get some novelty items from their online FF stores though, like pens, a toaster etc.

So really doesn't matter which airline's program if it's a one off trip. If not, then Singapore's or Air New Zealand.

  • There is not one "best' ff program. What is best for me maybe very different to what's best for you. It really depends on what your travel pattern will be over the next year or two. Some of the more obscure ff programs can be worth looking at ..

  • I believe the best star alliance program is US airways. Anyone can join and once you have some miles from your upcoming trip, wait a little while as they often have "sales" on buying miles. I bought enough miles for a business class ticket to NY for around $2000 doing this. Check out their award chart, you will see that they have very low award levels such as 110,000 for Australia-New York in business class. The only downside is that they don't allow one way tickets.

  • Does anyone know if you can still book RTW tix with QFF points? I went to the website and do see an option for multidestination, but presume that is for individually priced tix.

    Thanks

  • Join Aegean Miles&Bonus - you only need 20k points to qualify for *A gold for three years. Well worth it.
