It's not a true freebie - you have to sign up for a service but you can cancel it at any time and keep the book.

    Yep, this is the standard sign up deal. There are actually slightly better ones that include a bonus credit, see below.

    I've been enjoying audible for the last few months but then I haven't tried to cancel my subscription yet. I've read a lot of horror stories about how difficult it can get. Apparently if you try to cancel they make a 'special offer' that sounds like great value, but once you take the offer the link to cancel disappears and then you have to call the US customer service centre to cancel.

    I don't know if the .co.uk site is much different from the .com site, I doubt it.

      Yes they make a special offer on the UK site, I think there might even have been two special offers… but it was pretty easy to just 'cancel'. I had it for a year, still got a couple of books to listen to and will probably join again once I have done so.
