Laptop cooling pads?

Hi guys i own a 17-inch HP dv6 and it heats up quite a bit when i have got a few applications open or lots of tabs open for browsing.

I'm thinking of getting a cooling pad to reduce this heat issue. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good laptop cooling pad? What is a good price for one?

Thanks in advance!

Cooling pads are at best a band-aid solution — if your laptop is overheating even when it's just net browsing it may be sign that your heatsink fan may be clogged with dust or have stopped working.

If it's a particularly old laptop (1-2 years) then it may be time to give it a little cleaning out.

Anyway here are some options from MSY, reckon this one should do the job as it fits 17" laptops.

I bought the laptop in March 2011 so it has almost been 2 years now. In the first few weeks i noticed that the fan got real loud and laptop quite warm if i did anything that was a bit taxing. I think it maybe because of the i7 chip. In the last week or so i noticed when watching videos sometimes the picture stuttered a bit which wasnt a good sign.

A few weeks ago i tried to use compressed air to blow bits of dust out of the fan but i wasnt sure how successful that was as i couldnt see much dust come out. I'll try again just to make sure.

Thanks for your post! The cooling pad looks pretty decent and $20 is not too bad.

That's not very effective, because there are places where the air cannot reach and for the best effect you'll need to actually remove the back panel off the laptop and clean the heatsink with a brush or cotton swab.

  • Thanks again.

I'll try a thorough clean tommorow, hopefully that helps a bit. Looks like the screw driver set i got from Dick Smiths will come in handy!
