Need ADSL2 modem

i need a modem, my line is about 700m away from exchange if that matters. Cant decide between billion and TP-link or netgear and asus. Also not sure if i want a modem or a modem/router.

  • P2P?

Do you need wireless? If so, 54m or 150 or 300?

    VoIP? VPN?

    Bandwidth control or access control?

The more information, the better as you can narrow down your choices.

    • im noob at networking stuff, but what i do is download torrents and play games. Wireless is not as important, small house so reach is not an issue.

  • Billion 7700n is what you're looking for if you just want a reliable router. Only costs $60 via MSY and other stores.

If you are heavy on P2P, and you want Gigabit LAN, VOIP and all the works, spend more and get the 7800N ($120) or alternatively 7800NL $99 (no Gigabit LAN though)

    • can you explain to me what people use Gigabit LAN for? P2P? i download lots of torrents. and i believe i need a modem not a router.

Gigabit LAN = Local Area Network at 1000mbps. Typically, your wired home network has a max speed of 100mbps.
Gigabit LAN gives you 1000 mbps (that's 1 gigabit) therefore file transfers on your home network will be much faster.

Only relevant for people who frequently transfer or video stream stuff between devices at home, like networked attached storage devices (NAS) or streaming video from a computer to a media player.

P2P (Peer to Peer) basically refers to BitTorrent.

believe i need a modem not a router.

All the Billions we've been talking about are all ADSL modems.

OK, since you are a heavy torrent user, I recommend the Billion 7800NL.

$99 from MSY or PC Case Gear

        • I bypassed the need for gigabit with a NAS by downloading torrents directly to it. Found some hack addons so my WD my book world has torrent software on it. Awesome coz I can start torrents from my iPad then just watch them on the telly.

        • yes but this one doesnt have bandwidth control since more than one person will be using it at same time i need to limit their bandwidth to not interrupt games or alike.

  • If you're deciding between those brands, grab the Billion.

If you want the best I can think of, the AVM Fritz!box series has no equal. I used to sell Billion and Drayek as the more higher end modems, but the AVM has them beat.

5 Year warranty, simultaneous 2.4 and 5GHz. Rock solid. ALWAYS get minimum 20% more speed when connected to ADSL line, but have seen a whopping 70% improvement as well.

I cannot begin to list everything, but Gigabit ports, automatic channel selection based on traffic on channels, full Telephony with faxing/answering machine, ability to connect DECT phones to it without a base station. Think of every feature you've ever seen on a modem, this will have it. Scheduler for blocking kids (or wife) from web sites based on black list, full monitoring of traffic. I'm going to stop now. I'll be here all day.

Otherwise like I said, nothing wrong with Billion as a cheaper option.

    • never heard of it, i always see billion as most recommended but often they assume i will get the expensive 7800N which is beyond my budget. For me its between, Billion 7800N vs Asus N12U B1 vs TP-Link TD-w8970 but i will have to look into Fritzbox before i can say anything about it. Billion is okay except it lacks certain features like bandwidth limit which i can use to download without having it interfere with games. Also not sure if i want a trenchip or broadcom, im close to exchange and its rumored that trendchips serve that better.

      • Fritzbox, very high end but also fairly expensive routers. Overkill for most people but if you're looking for a modem router that does bandwidth shaping and website blacklisting, its one of the very few routers which support such an option.

As for QOS I believe the only Billion routers with fine grained control on QOS settings is the 740x series. The Gargoyle firmware is also said to be pretty handy at handling bandwidth control and shaping per IP address, but it only runs on routers, not ADSL modems.

        • Im leaning towards the asus n12u i mentioned seems to have all the features i want but doesnt have the abilty to change snr and stuff like that i think. If im gonna get a billion it would be 7800NL, as im going for modem/router device.
