  • Comes with 2x2TB hard drives unfortunately and not a 4TB hdd so no spare slot if you want to add another hard drive later.

  • seems pretty good for what i'm after. i want a high capacity storage NAS but i'm not computer savvy enough to work out the HP n40L

anyone else have any comments on this as i'm honestly considering it….

    • N40L is just a computer basically if you can install windows. Plug in a sata cable and some brackets that's all you need. But bare in mind this is a good deal due to the fact one 2tb hard disk is still around 90 bucks.

      • Actually if you just wanted it as a NAS, you'd install FreeNAS, It just works.

  • Bought one of these (locally) a couple of years back and so far can say I'm happy.
Not a PC geek by any means and I found it hard to set up (mine came preloaded with some very old software and it took me forever to get it upgraded - had to use US website to download it).
The web interface is pretty good and I like being able to access home files from anywhere using iphone/ipad.
Read/write speed is ordinary - don't expect stellar performance.
So far, 2 years in, I am happy with the unit which was cheap and coming with 2 inbuilt 2TB drives makes for a good deal

  • Just a note to anyone who wants to listen, this model is the standard one, is not the high-performance series. The V series has a much faster file transfer speed and this is the model that I have had for the last 2 years, it is excellent and would recommend spending the extra money to get the faster transfer speeds.

  • My only concern would be is 4TB going to be enough, I would not describe myself as a big user of content but am already running out of space with 4TB and was looking to upgrade to more space. It's amazing how quickly you can fill up TB's of space.

I am also thinking of going the HPn40L route once closer to end of financial year (to claim it back, I am sure I can justify it somehow)

    • 3tb hard disks are dropping in price going to pick up 4 for my micro server. It's a big investment but it lasts for ages.

      • -1

What micro server do you use?

If it is one of the HP ones, what raid controller did you install?

  • Any ideas on the specifics of the actual hard drives inside these?

  • Hmmmm pity the Synology ones won't ship here

  • I have a dilema:

Dedicated NAS OR an external USB harddrive connected to a wireless Router

    (about the same price)

    • I suppose it depends on what you want to do.
Some of the NAS's (like the Buffalo) have extra features such as built in torrent client so you don't need a PC to grab stuff. Or allows you to access your data externally (i.e. work) or does snapshots/remote backups of your PC/Mac

But I doubt you can get a similar sized NAS for the price of a USB hardrive.
