Kindle Paperwhite $164 Dick Smith

60

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (no ads version). $164 at Dick Smith after asking for a OzBargain price (yes, I muttered those exact words, in kind of a subliminal message kind of way). The advertised price is $169 and they claim to be increasing the price to $199 shortly. This price should be available nationally, I got it at a Sydney store.

This is the best price I can find for immediate delivery (walk in, walk out).

It is also available for $148.70 direct from Amazon US;
http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/91849

or $115.75 for the brave here;
http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/92071

This becomes a deal as good as Amazon US (39c difference) if you are able to claim back the GST, bringing your total investment to $149.09 where with Amazon, there was no GST payable, so no GST claimable.

After double checking just now, there are three places listed on staticice that claim a lower list price, but their $30 delivery fees make it about $25 more costly, plus you cant walk in, walk out.

    Dupe and standard price.

    • Show me the dupe or standard price reference please.

      • That post already deleted/moved because of standard price.

If DSE didn't say xx% off means it is their standard price.

        • Read the post again. (Current) Standard price is higher.

        • Don't believe what the staff told you.

        • +1

Your comment doesn't make sense to me. I don't need you to believe anything.

        • +1

It show $169 on the web site and you claimed you asked for $5 discount (not official discount and everybody can try and ask)

And compare from Amazon still more expensive and you believe they will increase the price to $199 shortly since nobody locally have it yet.

So I don't think it is what ozbargainers looking for.

Also $169 been posted here in the past 2 days and deleted.

For me I won't post it here if I asked for $5 discount from JB, DSE, Harvey Norman.

        • +2

So in that case you guys think I should post a bargain here after I went into JB, DSE asked for $5 discount.

        • -5

if you pay $5 less, tell Oz Bargain.
if you pay $5 more, Tell ya Darlin.

        • This is perhaps a problem for OzB in the future. I will be the first to admit $5 is not the best discount on a product ever, but it is the best price right now for delivery right now on this product. That makes it a valid deal, not awesome, but valid.

Add to that the ability to neg by annon, we never really find out why.

This is probably better in the forums, now that I am on a roll, but maybe negs should be backed up by proof of a better deal elsewhere, kind of like putting your money where your mouth is. This negativity I am sure is preventing others from making great deals available / known and having us crowdsource the legitimacy of it, if required. It takes time and effort to post a deal, put some research into it that we should support that in a positive way.

        • If that price is cheap than Amazon I will call it a bargain.

fwiw, I got the Kobo Glo for around $130 and really like it. The light is great.

    • from where? im thinking of buying the glo as well

      • Go to JB HiFi and show them this on your phone:

        http://www.ht.com.au/part/AJ552-Kobo-eReader-Glo-eBook-reade…

        They will pricematch it :)

        • Or Officeworks becaues HT and OW is under the same "Coles" group and you can get 5% more.

        • At the time I tried going to a few different Officeworks stores but they all said that the didn't sell the Glo in store and it was only online. I wasn't sure how truthful they were being tbh, but I needed it in a hurry and JB was the next best place :)

        • I think they still do it in store at least the black one, you can check the availability.

Which I prefer the black because the black make the screen more white.

can only claim GST if the amount on the tax receipt is at least $300

    • Thats not correct.

You're thinking about the tourist refund scheme only. There are other reasons you might claim GST credits.

    • Why lie? That is just deceitful and going to cause people more confusion that the fighting above about weather this classifies as a discount. I wish people would do a little research before posting.

      • I dont think he/she was lying, just didnt realise.

  • Yeah, Kobo GLO is way cheaper and is pretty much the same in everyway to the kindle paper white. (except the paperwhite is supposed to be 'whiter'?)

If fact kobo glo is even better in some aspects.

    • I read a review with sample pics - the light distribution looked less even on the kobo. But that didn't influence me - I had a great experience with kindle warranty (keyboard version) making me somewhat brand loyal.

      • Not sure if it really is less even, afaik, the kobo glo frontlit is the same as the paper white and some people even preferred the glo to the paperwhite. Its really down to personal preference.

But for those who don't have a preference for either, the glo is an easy choice since it is cheaper

        • Also Glo can take ePub directly without conversion.

        • Just for research purposes, incase someone is considering the two (Kindle vs Kobo);

          http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/ereaders/1295554/kobo-glo
Next to the Paperwhite, the Glo's light is definitely brighter, but it's not as well distributed and there's a clear strip of light at the top where the LEDs are. With the light turned on the Glo's screen is easy to read, but the text looks a little more washed out.

paid $105 from amazon jp and got it within a week.

    • Is that using the method I have linked in the description?

  • +3

wait, wasn't this $149 from Dickies just last week. Pretty sure it was the brand new paperwhite too

    • -4

      No

      • No @Baybeans it was the new paperwhite pre-order before they had stock

        • the old Kogan trick ;-) I would have gone in on that action though.

        • +2

Confirmed. I ordered one from DSE when it is still pre-order stage at $149 plus $4.95 delivery although I got my order shipped next day or two so pretty much it is as normal order process.

Quite happy with my order especially I used my $85 DSE gift card given to me by my friends.

        • well played. great deal.

        • Another prove $169 is normal price.

        • huh? I am not sure why you are still arguing this point. There is no debate that the normal price is $169 at Dick Smith.

        • Well there is mention in the OP of an increase to $199 which personally I think is bull. I also note that this will be selling at other retailers in the near future I believe DSE only has a 3 week exclusive on them I would expect with increase competition will come a better price. Seeing as this could be recently had locally for $149 then I consider $164 not a bargain.

        • Seeing as this could be recently <snip>

          "Recently" being the keyword.
          Not anymore

        • +2

Not anymore indeed but that doesn't make a negotiated discount of $5 a bargain

  • I would rather just buy from amazon personally. Especially if you can get it sent by a friend in the US. Just my opinion. I am not negging.

  • I would buy from Amazon. As discussed with costumer service there, if the device bought from Dick Smith has quality problems, you still need to contact Amazon for a replacement. As such, I cannot justify the extra dollars for any reasons!

    • +1

Incorrect. We deal with the warranty; we swap it over instore.

      • Yeah I think they will swap it in store, like my $5 ereader and my colleague Sonic Smartphone. Because of they don't have stock anymore they gave us refund which my colleague received $188 voucher from them to buy a newer phone.

  • -1

    Standard local price, no bargain

    • -1

can you please remove your neg - its not the standard price (169 vs 164).

      • It was $149 on preorder - not a bargain

        • Was, but that deal is no longer available.

Anyway, if you can remove your neg, that would be appreciated. Thanks.

$145 there and free delivery to Metro areas :)

    • +1

      nice

      • I'm going to see if dick smiths will price match. Wish me luck

PS Watch out for a few websites listing the paper white at $113 or around that price, they throw on a $29 delivery fee which brings it to $142 anyway
