  • Oh wow, bought it at $200 only a month ago

  • ooo i've always been interested in trying to learn guitar as a beginner

do you guys think this is a good offer?

    • Best to have a strum of a few and find one you like.

    • I tried Martinez Slim Jim 3/4 classical guitar at Allans Music Bourke St, VIC
recently (last friday) i checked it was $99. pretty good sound and soft on fingers
u might wanna try it if you're in Melbourne. not sure if interstate got it

  • I'm almost certain Ashton is an Australian brand.
Have a look around at your local store (if it still exists)… Should be able to get it at similar/cheaper prices.

  • +1

Is this Yamaha a good offer and decent guitar for starting out? I want to start learning and don't want to spend heaps but want something that is decent?

Any guitar pro's out there give any advice on this?

    • Imo the price here are not bad, just depends on your choice. As mentioned above, if possible, go try out a few guitars and have a feel. Check the frets and string spacing (some are small and picking with large fingers wouldn't be ideal). Some sound boxes are thin which will be slightly quieter but lighter. For <$500 I wouldn't worry about sound quality too much - just get nice strings so you're comfortable playing them. I'd get a cutaway guitar but that's just my personal preference. I started out with a Yamaha apx-500 from gumtree but moved onto a Martin xc1t ellipse. Still think the former is excellent and very playable but the strings are just a little too close together to pick.

I think maybe gumtree would do a better deal if you're just starting. You could possibly score some picks, capo, carry bag/case, tuner (though an iPhone app also works) and other accessories if the seller is willing to include them. Just check the fingerboard and frets are not badly worn out. I'd recommend putting on new extra- or custom light gauge strings so you won't hurt your fingers that much and are easier to pick.

  • Make certain the neck is not twisted if getting second hand. I would reccomend taking someone with you that knows about guitars if getting second hand as there is usually a reason they are there. Guitars are personal things but my advice for a beginner is low action with a cut away preferred. A lifetime of enjoyment , good luck with it.
