Case of Asahi (24pk) for $39.90 @ Dan Murphy's

390

The QV store in Melbourne had none on the shelves but the guy said there was heaps out the back.

Online you can organise click & collect or have it delivered (seems to be $7 for metro areas).

Also, Boozle says 1st Choice Liquor has it for $39.85 but I couldn't find it on the 1st Choice Liquor website to confirm.

Japan's No.1 beer now made in Thailand, especially for us Australians

    • +6

I went to buy some when I got back from Japan read the bottle and was appalled :(

      • +7

yeah especially when you can get a 500ml can from a vending machine on the street for 200Y!

        • +2

Yeah in the middle of no where when you think how the hell do they refill these things. I love Japan. 100 yen exchange rate atm, let's go!!!!

        • When I went a few years back think it was around 55 yen. 100 yen would make for quite a different trip…

    • Cheap deal, although I prefer Sapporo myself

    • If your in Adelaide, alot of pubs around Hindmarsh sell "two dogs", a premium Japan beer brewed by SA brewing (lion group).

  • +2

Havent had it for a number of years, so how bad is the thai stuff?

  • sorta foamy, taste is whack - made me wanna vomit

  • This one my top fav. You can even get price beat at 1st choice.

  • +1

    Edit:

I wrote, taste a little dry… and then read the name…. then edited my comment to remove it…

  • Is this brewed in Japan?

    • +4

      Country Thailand
      Brewery Under license in Thailand

      • +1

Thanks, I will skip this deal then.

I tried this in Thailand. It's dirt cheap there, around 85 cents per cold stubbie. I wasn't impressed. It's
not horrible tasting, it's just a typical example of the cheap beers made in Thailand.

Dans have Oettinger Pilsner for $29.95 a case, that is very, very good value. Made in Germany, full strength. Top drop at an absolute bargain price.

    • +11

      +1 for Oettinger Pilsner

      • +3

        There's a button for that

    • Cheap in Thailand, compared to what?

In Thailand it is marketed and priced at the premium end of the market.

    • I find Oettinger to be have quite a metallic taste and other than that quite bland. Plus you can't compare it to Asahi, they are entirely different beers (Asahi is not a pilsner and doesn't anything like a pilsner)

  • +6

1st choice is selling Sapporo case for $46 with a free 650ml can. Far better beer in every way than asahi.

Tried to chase this deal at First Choice Browns Plains but they were all out of the cartons. They contacted their nearest store at Waterford and got them to hold one carton for me. When I got there, manager explained she made a mistake and they didn't have any cartons however she made up a carton of 17x Sapporo and filled the rest with 7x Kirin and gave me two cans of the Sapporo for my troubles. Also reduced the price so I walked away paying $34.50. Excellent customer service!!

  • +3

I think Sapporo is made in Canada, wtf.

    • +2

Check the packaging. Coopers in Adelaide is now making Sapporo. Tastes good to me.

    • +1

The big cans were always made in Canada and imported. Nonetheless Canada is a reputable brewing nation. Rather them than Thailand

  • +7

When you compare real Asahi to this stuff made in Thailand you really can't go back. If you get the 2L can/bottles from Dans/BWS it's made in Japan and tastes very different.

    • Thanks for the tip. I didn't realise you can get the real Asahi here.

  • +3

all sold out at southern river and canningvale :(

    • +1

1st Choice in Jandakot had a few left yesterday, but I'd ring first.

      • I speed read that as 'Jakarta' lol

    • Heaps at Cannington down the road from Carousel.

  • +1

Agree. Beer made under licence in another country does not taste the same as the original brewed in the country of origin.

    • +2

Sometimes it can still taste ok in general. What I refuse to do is pay the original price for an inferior product. In this case your paying $40 for Asahi's slightly less attractive sister. So original Asahi at $40 is a bargain, is it anymore if we are stuck with the 'New' product. Maybe not. Let our wallets do the talking and see.

Edit. We don't get it for less then $55 in Darwin. I would grab one for $40 if I saw it.

  • +1

Just when the're are special for $29.99 at GWD (VIC) and the get the big boys to price match.

Dont forget the cost to your liver

    • +4

My liver seems to like it just fine.

  • Can confirm 1st Choice has it at this price as well, picked up one yesterday. Unfortunately when I got home and opened it up saw is made in Thailand. Not printed on the carton anywhere.

The last one I got way back was made in China, but at least that was printed on the outside of the carton.

Nevertheless neither taste the same as the Japanese Asahi.

  • Nuclear radiation is my concern.yuh….. my concern

Whats going on with all these imported crap???? Australia brews many of the finest beers in the world!!!

    • +1

There's some great beers here, for sure. But this is Ozbargain and a popular beer post here means cheap. (or good value). $39 a carton seems pretty good to me. Especially since Asashi is typically more expensive (I assume).

I really enjoyed drinking Asashi in Japan. Never tried the local stuff here, although by the sounds of things I should avoid it?

      • The local stuff is brewed in Thailand so tastes quite different to the Japanese stuff.

    • If you're going to buy an overly-marketed, generic, piss-lager you may as well buy one thats made in Australia!

  • +1

U enjoyed asashi in japan maybe becoz it was local? Lol… we all like trying local beers when travelling…. but a japanese local brand made in thai for aus market…. mmm….. avoid avoid

    • Yeah but it's cheap. This is OzBargain after all. ;)

That said, i'm going to take everyone's advice here and avoid it like the plague. Any recommendations on good, cheap beer?

      • +1

Nobody wants to get flamed for recommending a beer you didn't like. My advice. If you are unsure of a beer. Buy a single or 6 pack. Then if your happy with the taste. Get a carton.

  • Australia does have many beers brand, none of them is world famous. thats a shame. indeed countries smaller than us have world famous brand such as tiger in singapore, heineken in dutch

    • How about Foster's? I have never seen anyone drinking it in Australia yet it's on sale in many other countries. Only time I tried it was in London, and yes, it's very plain and nothing special.

Obligatory wiki quote: "In recent years, Foster's has consistently sold in the region of 5 million hectolitres each year in the UK, making it the best selling beer after Carling." That's for 2011.

      • Funnily enough, similar to this Asahi, the Fosters that is sold overseas is actually brewed in Scotland.

I had a friend visit from the UK and he insisted on having a photo at the beach with a can of Fosters so he could live out the stereotype. There was only two problems. One it was winter, and the beaches were freezing, and two, we could not find a single place that actually sold Fosters here.

We ended up finding one at a dinky little "1000 beers from all over the world" type boutique beer shop.
