Do yourself a BIG favour and if you have to spend more to buy a mulching mower, do it. You'll never have to get rid of bags of grass again. No stopping the mower, removing the catcher, empty it, back on the mower… All that bending over, turning the mower off and on (or leaving it running while you empty). A mulching mower means less petrol wasted, and less time and effort.
There's a lot of junk out there now. Look for a base with a Briggs and Stratton engine mounted on it. They have been making basically the same engine for decades and parts are easy to get. The main difference between the different models is the plastics they mount around the engine. So try and get one without all the plastics. They are four stroke engines - in other words the oil and fuel are separate - like with a car. Two strokes engines on the other hand are noisy, and messy as you have to mix the oil and petrol.
If you have to mow over rocks, you'll want to get a mower with a steel base because the rocks can crack an aluminium base. If you have mostly only lawn, an aluminium base is fine and it won't rust. Ball bearing wheels are nice and smooth, but who cares - they are more expensive to replace too.
