Huawei Ascend Mate Smartphone 6.1" HD Display + Boost Pre-Paid Starter Kit - $430 Harvey Norman

101

Have you got a fetish for big screen phones but don't want to spend a fortune? Then this might be to the phone for you…. the Huawei Ascend Mate with a massive 6.1" HD Display for only $430! BONUS $40 Boost Prepaid Starter Kit @ Harvey Norman (In-store and online)

I thought this was a pretty price for a quad-core phone with massive screen. It has a 4050mAh battery which is comparable larger than most phones on the market. I can't seem to find a price comparison anywhere from an Australian retailer (please post if you know of any other prices floating around).

Unfortunately (and I don't know why) but it only has 2GB of internal store but you could get a memory card which is expandable up to 32GB.

Obviously not the best smartphone out there but still pretty decent for the price.

General specs (from HN website):
- Get ready for the Huawei Ascend Mate, which features a whopping 6.1" HD Display, a 4050mAh Battery, 1.5GHz Quad Core Processor, 2GB RAM, an 8MP Rear Camera with 1MP Front Camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity and a 3.5mm headset connector, all on an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system.

No NFC, 241ppi on a 6.1" are the main cons. The larger battery doesn't do anything as the power consumption of this screen is probably bigger too. There is also plenty of motion blur if you look really carefully. Oh and emotion is horrible too… Didn't really like it when I tried the display model overseas.

Unless I really really need a almost tablet screen, I'd still get the GSIII or N4 in this price range.

    • No NFC

That's a con for a 6.1"? Do you actually plan on getting a "phone" this large out to pay for things?

The rest I can agree with…

      • IMO felt that at this price 400+, NFC comes almost standard to todays market. But I do agree the general use of it is still quite a while away. But I use it24/7 in the form of profile 'tags' and 'stickers'.

NFC is useless, at least for the next couple of years. The 241ppi is good enough for most people.

However, the $430 will be the standard pricing, its Hardly Normal after all, so chances are it will be cheaper else where.

    • what is the % of the population even using NFC atm? very low.

until it is used often, i don't see how u can say that it is a con.

2GB is the RAM size. They don't say how much flash storage it has, but surely 4GB is minimum for Android 4?

not compatible with many games, as I heard.

    • -2

This will make it useless. People might as well just get 7" tablet with cheaper prices.

    • Was it because of the GPU? I think the screen resolution shouldn't be an issue.

      • -4

it is Huawei own K3V2 chip, highly uncertain about the quality and compatibility. I trust Chinese factories, but not Chinese real high-tech products

  • Anyone know if these are any good for the cheap price?

Not really. Large screen, but very average hardware, and average resolution. And they also don't support Next-G.

If wanted a cheap phone, would wait a few weeks as Huawei W1 W8P was just released for 120 pounds, like $160 for a nice phone. Still 230-350 on HK sites.

    • I have a Kogan 5" Agora on Vodafone and it's awesome.

I thought the low ram and speed would make this phone lag but I can safely say it outperforms my old Galaxy S2 which was a laggy nightmare. I believe it runs better due to vanilla android (no Samsung/HTC/brandname crap).

Screen resolution isn't as crisp as my S2 but I've got used to it. Camera needs adjusting to suit the environment and flash is useless (like most smartphones). I don't really play games so haven't put it through that test but if you want to comment on OzBargain, search the web, use Facebook, check emails, call, txt and other general uses I'd highly recommend it.

If you're with Telstra, look elsewhere.

I'll stick with my Nexus 4 and my old $90ish ZTE 3G tablet; thanks Optus! All for not much more.
I could probably get $70 for that Tab (being 3G has its benefits, despite its age; plus GREAT cyanogenmod ROMs).

I'm waiting for some action with some next-generation budget tablets - waiting for the next-gen iPad / iPad Mini / Google Nexus products.

I wonder what is the maximum size some company will make a tablet that they market as a phablet? Isn't this also a phablet rather than a smartphone, given its tablet-nearing size?

    • Love my Nexus 4 for similar $$$.

You could get a Samsung 3 for similar as well…

6.1 might suit some users very well tho…

      • Want some might big hands I got samsung note 1 and its pretty big but I got big hands . People still laugh though

My experience, keep away from Huawei… at least in the next a few years

i would rather get a Asus Fonepad, 7" monitor and cost less than $300, however, not available in Australia yet, maybe later?

    • Yeah~ I am waiting this product as well, but seems like no any news so far? And I found ASUS start pre order in Taiwan: http://shopping.pchome.com.tw/?mod=item&func=exhibit&IT_NO=D…

      Covert to AUD the price is around AUD 300 ( 1:30 ), I can't resist this price…XDrz

      • it has been released in Taiwan, you could order it now from pchome.com.tw, postage is gonna be around $10. i am waiting for it to be released in HK as i would be there soon.

  • unlocked bootloader? ><

  • I have learned with Huawei they NEVER update there phones so if it has Jellybean then thats all it will ever have so keep that in mind before purchase…

  • is this locked to telstra's boost?

  • So this phone actually has 1GB RAM not 2GB as advertised by Harvey Norman up until today, also only 8GB internal memory not 16GB.

    Very…professional.
