Need a new King Size mattress

Hi guys, looking for a new king mattress, been holding off for a couple years with what I have, but it's just not that good. Prepared to spend upto $1800. Anyone in melb seen a good deal on a known brand? Or any reccomendations would be great.

Need it to be pillow top and soft.thats about it.

What about Ikea Sultan? When I looked recently they were hard to beat on features Vs price. They have several types from memory foam, latex, wool, sprung and combinations thereof. I'm very happy with the one I ended up with (SULTAN HJARTDAL). The memory foam pillow top even zips off for easy cleaning.
They have sales every half year of so, and you can pay around 30% less than the already low price.
Ikea also have great returns and guarantees policies so if you are not happy you can take it back.

As a general comment I find the whole industry to be deliberately confusing with much custom labelling of generic mattresses. There are ridiculous premiums put on mattresses with cheap materials or features that you may not need. For these reasons I find Ikea to be one of the most transparent mattress sellers around.

and if you're an ikea family member (free to join) you get 12 months worth of returns
we bought a mattress, about 5 months in decided it was way too soft. we swapped it no problem, even though it was slightly stained

        Eeeeww.

        • Note to self: never buy a mattress from the IKEA clearance section

      • Note that the Ikea Family card is not available in WA & SA.

    • I live 5 min from Ikea springvale. I'll have a look… But much prefer a well known brand.. I think there is a bed place there too at homemaker center.

      • Turns out Ikea don't do king size. Ahhh well

Bugger. Thanks for being open to the suggestion anyway.

  • if u want a ozbargain recommendation, check out tommy swiss on ebay :) i got one they are cheap and very comfy

    ozmattress.com.au is pretty great :)

  • Try eBay may not be name brand but cheap and just as comfortable (if not more so) . Mine is a name brand but my kids both have ones from eBay one memory foam and one latex. I prefer the memory foam personally . They were under $300 delivered each (queen size) compared to my approx $2000 (king size from Harvey Norman)

  • I wouldn't be buying ANY mattress without first testing it. A few $ 'saved' on a mattress you've bought online that turns out to be uncomfortable is anything but a bargain.

  • I would buy a mattress that is designed to prevent disturbtion (this word is being considered for entry into the english dictionary) for you or whoever you're sleeping with (LTR only), in terms of noise/movement etc.

If you have one night stands, fwb's or ladies of the night, this is null and void.

Do not skimp on a mattress. You spend around a third of you life on it, you want it to be as comfortable as possible!

The Tempur range are amazing but very expensive and out of your budget. I wanted one in a queen, but was looking at around $2k. I ended up getting a pocket spring style mattress. The salesman was very helpful (an old timer) and not pushy - I went back on separate weekends and spent a long time lying on it to test it out. That's the only way to do it - I would never buy a mattress online, you have no idea what they feel like to you until you try them.

Pocket springs are an "oldie but a goodie" - great tech that has been perfected and works well.

    • Not sure of Tempur brand? I might have a look tomorrow depending where I can get it? I can go outside my budget, almost go to $3k but much prefer not to.

      • Tempur is amazing. I saw a sale advertised recently where they were throwing in the base, I think Harvey Norman? It was a good price too. I paid over $1k for my base (it's fancy) so if it's any good, it would be a great saving.

If you don't want to spend the $$ for a tempur get an ergoflex.

      http://www.ergoflex.com.au/

they regularly have 50% off sales so wait for that. we got a king size for 1200$ delivered and its great. They are online only and when doing my research there was a lot of praise for them. Its firmer than the standard tempur which is a positive for some.

      lots of info here

Some people complain about sleeping hot on them, i use to sleep much hotter on an expensive pillow top spring mattress than the ergoflex.

  • I bought a new pillowtop king size from ebay a few years ago. IIRC it was less than $300 delivered and I've been very happy with it. Probably a bit firm for the OP.

  • Harvey Norman have 50% off selected mattresses. I looked at a king coil medium chiro pillow top. $2250 at 50% off, or the next model down was $1750 at 50% off. See if I can justify an extra $500 for slightly better quality.both are endorsed by the chiropractor thingo and ten year garauntee. As said by 'one man clan' above.., it's not something I want to skimp on, as I spend a third of my day there.

I tried memory foam, but wasnt my thing either..

It's amazing when shopping around, you can spend $500 to $8000. The difference between the $500 and $2250 is insanely better.

  • I bought a Sleepmaker mattress from HN for about $1000 when they had 30-50% off. Love it.

Don't skimp on a mattress! and NEVER buy a waterbed :)

  • Do consider Blessed Earth 100% Wool mattresses. It's naturally comfortable and supportive, and 100% Australian made.
You spend the most hours on the bed than anywhere else. Invest on a good bed that rests your body and mind.

Use code 'blessing' for 15% off.

    • Hmmmm……"They are made without metal springs, which create a harsh energy and electromagnetic field that can interfere with sleep patterns, and are wonderfully comfortable. "

Thanks, now I know how to fix my TV reception…..

        • Thanks.

Here's a little history behind the Victoria made mattress:

        • The organic cotton stuff sounds like a great product, but having wool near your skin is a bad idea (at least those with sensitive skin) according to my dermatologist. I don't like the sound of a wool bed.

        • Blessed Earth's bedding products are covered by 100% organic cotton. So for the pillows and other bedding materials like mattresses, you won't be in contact with wool at all.

I personally don't like some of my wool sweaters because they can be prickly. However, I adore my IceBreaker superfine Merino wool pull-over. So the grade, and processing of the wool definitely matters.

  • Short & sweet.. I recommend AH Beard without doubt. Can be cheaper than the sealys and the other big brands sometimes but much superior by a long way.

Sealy… the dog won't even sleep on it, enough said? :-)

    • where is the best place to buy them? I may need a base as well.

  • ozmattress.com.au

bought ours from them, great bed

  • This…

    http://www.ergoflex.com.au/memoryfoammattress/memory-foam-ma…

I have one and will never go back to a sprung mattress. Best purchase ever

I got my king size for around $1200 when they had a sale last year

    • Thanks for the tip. Ill keep a lookout for this one. Hopefully there will be a sale soon.

    • +1 for my Ergoflex memory foam mattress. I really love this thing. I train every day and our coach always harps on about how important it is to get quality, unbroken sleep. As a back sleeper, this mattress does exactly what you want it to do. Their positive review history on Product Review is what ultimately made me want to buy: http://www.productreview.com.au/p/ergo-flex-memory-foam.html

  • i toss and turn a lot and so does my partner. i was thinking of getting this, as it comes with a base which I lack.

    http://cudo.com.au/campaigns/its-the-mecca-of-mattresses-dre…

but thought i should look through here. does anyone know the brand above or would recommend a bed like the above from somewhere?

I just moved out of student accommodations and am looking at getting new furniture.

  • There's a sale at ergoflex now, from $449 for single. I'm still undecided though. Is it firm enough for lower back support so that it won't sink in after a year or two…

    • Bought one of these Queen sized ones from Ergoflex a few months back on recommendation from a friend (http://www.ergoflex.com.au/memoryfoammattress/memory-foam-ma…). I honestly never thought I'd enjoy it as much as I do. Really good quality, and it feels 'just right' for me (I'm a back sleeper). The mattress is firm enough, though it shapes to your body so it feels pretty comfortable.

Ah i better say what the outcome was with my mattress!

I ended up buying a clearance AH Beard posture plush for under $1000 from a local clearance outlet, when its currently in the Harvey Norman catalog for $1899(queen size, king would be $200 more)

had it for 6 nights. Its pretty nice!

    • Good to hear you are happy with your decision.
