Welcome to the ultimate guide of Netflix subscriptions (Turkey Edition)

Netflix has once again rolled out a 2nd price hike for Türkiye within 4 months. Please see the statistics section below for an interesting read. Luckily, Netflix's Password Sharing restrictions still do not apply to Türkiye.

This guide is the latest updated guide I've made so far. There are 2 complete methods to sign up. Please show some love and any comments, concerns, suggestions or feedback are welcome :)

  • Turkey is no longer the cheapest country for a Netflix subscription on all tiers, after they keep increasing prices every few months.
    • However, obtaining a Turkey-based Netflix Gift Card is extremely easy and effortless, making it one of the easiest and therefore cheapest country to sign up with.
  • Pakistan is the cheapest country for all Netflix plans, however, obtaining a Pakistan-based Netflix Gift Card to sign up is almost impossible. Egypt is the next cheapest, but impossible to sign up for the same reason. If you have a bank card locally from these countries, feel free to sign up directly otherwise.

Please see @Scrooge McDeal's post for Netflix Kenya, which is slightly cheaper than Netflix Turkey. However, note that some members have had their memberships cancelled and payments refunded.

Instructions – Method #1 (Using Turkey Netflix Gift Cards)

Please read the following instructions carefully. Use this method if you want Netflix to charge your Australian debit/credit card each month OR you would like to use Turkey Netflix Gift Cards moving forward.

Part 1 - Ensure you have your Australian mobile number and debit/credit card saved in your account

Complete either steps (a) or (b), depending on your current situation, BEFORE moving to Part 2

a. If you currently have an Australian Netflix subscription:

  1. Make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  2. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account. If your payment method is PayPal, remove this immediately and replace it will a debit/credit card.

  3. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, simply cancel your subscription and wait until the end of the renewal period (i.e. keep watching until the sub expires. Don’t let your sub go to waste since you’ve already paid for it). Once your subscription has expired, go to Part 2 or Part 3

b. If you DO NOT have a current Australian subscription:

  1. Sign up and subscribe to any Australian Netflix plan (preferably the lowest cost basic plan - don’t worry, you’ll get your money back). Do not use PayPal to sign up, it must be a debit/credit card.

  2. Once you’ve signed up, make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  3. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  4. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, go to Netflix Live Chat and tell them you “would like a full refund since you’ve changed your mind” - they usually don’t ask why but if they do make up some random excuse like “my sibling just signed up” or “you don’t want it anymore” etc. This should be a very fast step and take you only several minutes. The account cancellation will be effective immediately and the refund will arrive in a few hours or days

  5. Once your subscription has expired (should be immediate as you’ve cancelled it for a refund through live chat), go to Part 2

Part 2 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey

Please ensure your subscription has completely ended/expired before signing up to this deal (i.e. when you can no longer watch anything and Netflix asks you to resubscribe or restart your membership)

  1. Purchase a Turkey Netflix Gift Card (any value is fine, even if it's not enough to cover the full month)

Note: Choose a reputable seller and make an account so you have a record of the purchases if anything goes wrong. I recommend Turgame (I've bought Turkey Apple GC's from there and they have fast delivery (at night time AEST), they charge the same price as the gift card value and the payment gateway fee is very low) or g2a

  2. Once you’ve received your gift card, it’s time to redeem your gift card and sign up to Netflix Turkey at the same time. Make sure from Part 1 that you have not logged out. You must stay logged in to your Australian account. If you’ve logged out, please log back in now with VPN turned off (Logging into your Australian account with a VPN on gives an error)

  3. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/ (recommended, paid)
    Urban VPN: https://www.urban-vpn.com/ (recommended, free)
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/ (recommended, free)
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem 1: If you use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, sometimes it defaults to random serves and therefore random cities of Turkey that will give you the wrong pricing (ideally, you want Istanbul). In this case, keep turning off and on the VPN until it switches to a different server/location. Confirm the location by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/. If this fails, change your VPN provider.

  4. With VPN on, open a new tab and go to the following Netflix site to redeem your gift card See this screenshot:

    https://www.netflix.com/tr-en/redeem

Possible Problem: On the plan selection page, the currency is not in Turkish Lira
Possible Solution: The problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed

Possible Problem: When redeeming the Turkey Netflix Gift Card, it gives an error (code invalid, etc)
Possible Solution: The problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed. If after several VPNs and this issue still occurs, try to reach out to your place of purchase due to them possibly issuing you an incorrect code

  5. Follow the prompts of the sign up process. This screenshot will show the first page after applying the gift card. Click "Next" to land on this page. Choose the plan you want, then click "Next" to land on the payment page in step 6

  6. Proceed by choosing a backup payment method. Be careful with this step and look at the screenshot!

    • If you did Part 1 instructions correctly then your payment method is already saved within your account - in this case, press "skip this step" at the bottom. On the next page, click "Next" (see screenshot). Now Netflix will want to confirm your details to make sure it is correct as per (this screenshot). Double check, tick the checkbox and start your membership!

    • Otherwise, if for some reason you haven't done Part 1 correctly or your debit/credit card has expired, you will have to add a new debit/credit card (see screenshot). Beward this may prompt you for a Turkey number verification (which I guarantee you don't have otherwise you would have done Part 2) - if this happens, please complete Part 1 again (see fix below)

Possible Problem: After entering your debit/credit card details, it asks for a Turkish mobile number
Possible Solution: Two causes for this. Cause (1): the problem is due to your VPN - Double check or change your VPN if needed, then go back to step 4. Cause (2): This is because you've entered a new debit/credit card. In this case, please click back on your browser and avoid entering a new card by pressing "skip this step" at the bottom. If this option does not appear, please restart Part 1 and ensure you save the card you wish to use as a backup payment.

Possible Problem: My debit/credit cards keep declining, and I'm unable to subscribe
Possible Solution: It's likely the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed and restart the whole process. However, if VPN is not the problem, you can continue to subscribe without a backup payment method (i.e. start your subscription with just the Gift Card you bought), and then afterwards you can contact live chat and tell them you need to update your payment method by asking them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Note: If you bought a gift card that has a higher value than your selected plan, you’ve just used your gift card to pay for the first month, as well as partially for the second month. For the second month, Netflix will deduct the remaining of the gift card, and the remaining balance will come out of the credit/debit card you’ve inputted, and from thereon each month Netflix will keep charging your bank at those rates (be aware many banks like Commonwealth Bank have a small international transaction fee but this is only a few cents extra. Suncorp and Latitude Platinum have no international fees). Besides this, you should be saving >$100 AUD each year at least ($200 saving annually for the premium plan)

Instructions – Method #2 (Using your Australian Debit/Credit Card, Requires PingMe App for Turkey SMS Verification)

Please read the following instructions carefully. Use this method if you want Netflix to charge your Australian debit/credit card each month.

Part 1 - Ensure you have your Australian mobile number and debit/credit card saved in your account

Complete either steps (a) or (b), depending on your current situation

  5. Once your subscription has expired (should be immediate as you’ve cancelled it for a refund through live chat), go to Part 2 or Part 3

Part 2 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey

Please ensure your subscription has completely ended/expired before starting Part 2. It has completely ended when you can no longer watch anything and Netflix asks you to resubscribe or restart your membership

  1. With VPN off, log into your Netflix account

  2. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem: You use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, but it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul.
Possible Solution: You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  3. Open Netflix on a new tab and proceed to Netflix to choose your plan:

    https://www.netflix.com/

  4. Proceed by adding your Australian credit/debit card as the backup payment method.

  5. Enter a Turkish phone number for the SMS verification process.

You can use the service from "PingMe" to obtain a Turkish number for Netflix's SMS verification purposes for just a few dollars. Download the PingMe app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play store. Create an account, and recharge with "coins" (credits). 1 coin ($2.99 AUD @ App Store) is enough for 1 Netflix Turkey SMS verification, but you can also buy 5 coins ($10 AUD @ App Store) for the price of 3 in case you need it in the future. After obtaining your coins, click on the "Verification" tab on the bottom of the app and follow this screenshot: select "Netflix" for the App/Website and "Turkey (+90)" for the Country/Region. Proceed as per the PingMe app and use that to validate the Netflix SMS verification process.

  6. You're done! Enjoy your membership :)

FAQ

Q: I just signed up and when I go to watch something I get the following error: "Your account can't be used in this location"
A: New sign-ups to Netflix Turkey is subject to a local restriction lockout. This lockout period will last approximately 28-31 days after signing up. During this lockout restriction, you can still watch most shows and movies, but you must use a Turkey VPN to do so (otherwise an error will pop up preventing you from watching anything). You can turn off the VPN after the show/movie has loaded for faster connection (may or may not work). After up to 31 days, this Turkey restriction will be removed and your Netflix account will behave no different to an Australian Netflix account. This minor hassle for a month is well worth the savings in the long term.

Q: I just got a "Payment Declined - Update Payment Method" email from Netflix. What do I do?
A: This issue is being reported by many people who have recently signed up to Netflix Turkey. They seem to only a few months after signing up, but once fixed, it usually does not happen again. There are two ways to get around this issue:

  1. You can contact Netflix Live Chat and enquire about the "Payment Declined" issue. Make sure you chat with your Turkey VPN activated. If they ask, say you're in Turkey for a holiday, or came up with another excuse. Tell them that your payment has declined and you'd like to add a new credit/debit card. They should (if not, request them to) be able to send a payment form popup directly on the chat so you can add your new payment details. If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one. Once the payment is accepted, the "Payment Declined" issue shouldn't occur ever again.

  2. Log into your Netflix account and update your payment method (Turkey phone number required). When you follow the prompts to update your payment method, Netflix will require a Turkish number. You can use the PingMe service to obtain a Turkey phone number for the purposes of this SMS verification. It will cost you a few dollars to buy credits for the purpose of receiving this SMS.

Q: My current card expired. How do I update to a new debit/credit card?
A: See the FAQ directly above this question. If you're sticking with the same credit card account (i.e. just getting a new/replacement card against the same account), you may not have to do anything. Your Netflix account may automatically update to your new card details, due to a connection provided by Mastercard, Visa, AMEX, etc. See here and here and here for more details, thanks to @NitroJolt.

Q: How do I add Netflix Turkey Gift Cards to my Netflix account?
A: Log in and go to account settings. Click on Redeem gift card or promo code and redeem your Gift Cards there. You should be able to do this without a VPN. If it doesn't work, try with a VPN.

Q: I get an error when redeeming gift cards?
A: This is a VPN problem. Most likely the VPN server has been flagged. Double check or change your VPN if needed. In that rare 1% chance it's not a VPN problem, you may have a troubled gift card.

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I watch Netflix?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you watch a show or movie. VPN is only required for sign up. After sign up, use Netflix without a VPN and you will have access to the Australian Netflix library.

Q: I want to watch a show/move that is only available from another region or country. Can I do this?
A: If you want to watch a show or movie that is region locked to another country, you can do so by setting your VPN on your phone, laptop or PC to that particular country to watch it. Yes, you will need a VPN service for this, and most VPN providers should work.

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: I have an existing Netflix subscription, can I use the same email?
A: Definitely!

Q: My bank blocked my payment, what do I do?
A: Some banks block 1st attempt and then text to confirm it's you. Once you reply, 2nd attempt may work. If after several attempts it does not work, just go through the Gift Card method and avoid the pain

Q: Is signing up to Netflix Turkey going to affect my Netflix library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Netflix catalogue may be weird with brand new shows, etc… It might not even change anything, but if it does change, your Netflix catalogue will adjust to what you’re watching and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?
A: See here. Don't worry, there really isn't any tax you need to worry about.

        • I find Stremio to be pretty buggy at times. My husband tried to watch dragonball z and the first episode just kept playing a different one. And the subtitles/languages have no option to change depending on the link.

I prefer to use Kodi because it's more customisable but it is a PITA to set up

    • This is a one-and-done, for 4 households. Every software mess-about I've ever touched becomes a PITA. Safe to say, there's no guide as short as above.

    • Does this combo (Stremio + Torrentio + RD) work on AppleTV? This may be the answer.

@I Smell Pennies ISP back with a deal. Long time no see.

    • Likewise, I need to be active more :)

  • It's crazy to see how cheap in these countries comparing to Australia. Has anyone done the Youtube one which I believe that there is a long running deal as well. Is there any risk such as the credit card scam etc….

    • +1

I'm on the YT premium turkey … Not sure if you can still do it or not but haven't had any issues with it and I've been using either indian or turkey account for years.

      • I assume that you have to use credit card to make a payment. Not concerning about any scam activities considering using VPN and a dummy address in order to sign up. I generally prefer to use paypal everywhere.

        • +1

well the CC was already setup on the aus side so it's as safe as you'd expect Netflix to be with that type of data, then i canceled the sub and followed the above guide by using windscribe vpn and signing back up, i didn't have to enter any details in this process and everything that was already on file was used. Like you i prefer paypal whenever possible but unfortunately not able to use it for these subs…

          • @scud70: Thanks for your reply. I am more interested in the deal of YouTube Premium

            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/814526

In this Netflix deal, the payment method is saved in the existing Netflix. But that Youtube deal requires the credit card payment. A bit of nervous about that. But the price is so good.

            • @HappyBargainer: I'm on the Turkish one for YT family as well, but did that a long time ago which seems to have been closed off by not allowing overseas payment options, i haven't had any issue's but then again i signed up for it quite a while ago and it was very quick and simple.

              • @scud70: I saw the price difference which is really shocking. I am thinking maybe I could sign for an annual deal when I travel overseas. I didn't see there is annual option in Australia. Sometimes I would assume the annual plan should be a bit of cheaper than the monthly plan.

    • even crazier is the UK prices, AUD $35 for Premium.

I moved there for a couple of years and kept my Aussie account to pay the cheaper Australian Netflix prices!

      • I am thinking that the approach of signing of YouTube in a cheaper price when travelling in overseas then continuing the same YouTube subscription in Australia should be achievable. Do you agree?

Luckily you're reading it for free.

  • The AUD value couldn't keep up with the price hike xx

  • Wouldn't the Kenya Netflix be better as it's cheaper?

    • Depends

as long as the Turkish Lira continues to go through this inflation, it'll end up being cheaper than Kenya in no time

And then they'll hike the price again and we'll have this conversation again

      • Makes sense - thanks!

  • +2

bullish, going long Turkish lira as we speak

I got it in Kenya. Took a couple of minutes.

    • +1

My Wise card seems to not be accepted anymore; I tried a different bank's card and it let me add it (until the SMS verification came up, which I didn't bother with). For now, I have just put 2 months' worth in gift cards.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned, but they haven’t cracked down on sharing the account amongst different households. Not sure if that’s a Turkish account thing.

Oh and Netflix you basxxxds, you made a fortune during Covid so ease off you greedy bugxxrs. If you do crack down on this I’ll just give you up and watch SBS.

Stremio+Realdebrid = MUCH better service for a fraction of the money

    • While I am a FAN, it's MUCH better is an interesting take. For myself FWD\RWD\SKIP Intro don't work that well, certainly not as instant as Netflix. Streaming isn't instant, need to wait a few seconds. Navigation and Previews are slower. Not all content matches the thumbnails, a lot of older content isn't actually there.
But what you do get is access to the LATEST content at HIGH qualities, it's so good I don't use Plex anymore, and my plex setup was fully automated with overseer, radar\sonar ect… and was a dream to use.

      • New movies and 4k and downloadable? If so, I'll need to expand my Nas storages if I join this lol

        • It’s streaming so no local storage required

        • Not through Stremio, which is a streaming service only.
RD however allows you to download anything, you can just go in their website, you put the torrent magnet in and it will download it for you in their server at amazing speeds. When available, you can just download it to your computer or mobile or whatever

However Stremio+RD is so good and easy you don't feel the need to have the file downloaded anymore

      • lol do you prefer a service that gives you every movie and series available in perfect quality, but having to wait 3 seconds for the streaming to start and skip intro that is sometimes missing… OR a service that streams straight away and allows for titles skip buy has MAYBE 5-10% of the available movies and series?

On Stremio I can see whatever I want, whenever I want at top quality. Easy and intuitive to use. Subtitles available for most content in most languages. I can find movies I can't find anywhere else, like old movies etc
With Netflix you have just the netflix stuff (mostly crap) plus few other movies and shows. Thats it

I want ONE service with everything, not a million different services.
So yeah, no brainer, much much MUCH better service

        • Valid point, I am a Stremio user BTW and have been guilty of watching Netflix content on it, even though I have Netflix.

          • +1

@UltimateAI: I am a Amazon Prime Video sub but watch their stuff on Stremio anyway. Dont even have the Amazon app in my TV anymore lol

I think it's good for people to keep at least one subscription, to give some money to the industry.

    • Is there a free trial or one month payment to try? I heard it's 6 months sub

      • +2

$15 days is $5, I have the 180 days for $26.42 AUD + 800 Points (every 30 points you get 30 days free).
There is a referral program but I don't see it on the Ozbargain list.

    • Ive got Stremio and I find it to be a little buggy. Some shows get the green screen of 'downloading to blabla' and then nothing happens after a while. I like to watch foreign stuff and sometimes theres no audio or subtitle flexibility so I have to try different links. I find Kodi works a lot better, but its such a pain to set up compared to Stremio. I cant seem to browse the language catalogue on Stremio as well, not sure if they have it

      • yeah well for foreign stuff is hit and miss. Im Italian and I find most italian movies and shows, old and new. Not sure how well it works with other languages.
The green screen means RD is downloading it for you, if you check back shortly the movie will be available. It happens very rarely for me, only whne I look for very old or obscure stuff. Still a vastly better availability than any other paid service.

I have Kodi mainly for live sports. I find it super buggy, crashes all the time, the interface sucks, zero intuitive… I can't quite stand it to be honest

      • what addon do you use with kodi, all of them have stopped working for me

        • Fen, I only use Kodi for movies and shows. I did have issues last time installing Seren. Last time I used it was a week ago, what are you using? I find the Reddit group /addonsforkodi to be pretty good at finding out what's wrong, but it can get a bit snarky

    • Stan is only in Australia.

Seems Turgame have fixed the credit card issue they were having and I was able to buy 3 giftcards on the weekend. The codes also came through instantly instead of having to wait till after 5.

    • Same

    • I switched from Turgame to G2A as Turgame is waaaaay to convoluted with their payment system and extensive wait times. G2A are faster and have a much simpler checkout system for my liking.

  • Nvidea shield, downloader, apk time then download the streaming apps. Use with a vpn to be on the safe side

Even at this price Netflix is over priced. Annoys me how they don’t have same content across regions and try trick you swapping out thumbnails for same movies. Prefer my Jellyfin Server

  • Just in case someone is not aware. If you are with AGL Electricity/Gas you can get Netflix basic with ads for free. The other 2 tiers are discounted.

    • been with AGL for years, got excited and checked, not in WA :(

  • Anyone have any luck with PingMe, every time I try any turkish number I get the same response on the Netflix site saying an error has occurred try later?

  • I was able to arrange a Pakistan debit card to setup the account, But now I am unable to add my own Wise or MCQ as backup payment methods.

  • I get
149.99 lira for standard plan, why is it different?

They are kicking accounts off.. my turkey subscription got booted off 8 days after my last payment with no notification and they removed my payment method as well..

    • Same same :-(

      • Gift card payment or debit/credit card?

The whole effort to save $4.89 is wild, and top of your subscription from the VPN you're using.

    • $50/year we can get something else we don't really need here on ozbargain. :)

    • +1

      😂 its the ozbargain way.

It's a discount of $11.30/month for many who go premium/4K. Stacked with one of the many ~95-98% Cashrewards/Shopback VPN cashbacks and your total savings add up.

But hey, if you think that's "wild", maybe you're on the wrong website.

      • No I'm on the right website, rather not go through 10 hurdles to save couple dollars lol

  • My kenya netflix got disabled….back to turkey, had to use a vpn to get it working. Looks like they are cracking down hard…
Kenya account was using Debit.. let's hope the gift card route stays open..

    • Lots of people on reddit confirming turkey accounts got nuked too

I think managing it through Apple is much easier. You just need to create a Turkish Apple ID, go to the AppStore and subscribe to the in-app purchase. Since billing is managed through Apple, your Netflix region can stay to whatever it is currently and you don't have to deal with VPNs.

    • +1

Nah Netflix doesn’t allow billing via the App Store anymore for new or returning customers.

      • You're right, just assumed it worked since it does with YouTube Premium.

        • +1

Yea Netflix was the first thing I tried after creating my Turkish Apple account.

Works really well with a lot of other apps though.

ugh… they cancelled my netflix account 3 days into the month….

"To protect members against unauthorized charges, we sometimes cancel accounts that show signs of unusual activity. It looks like your account was canceled for this reason."
"Kindly contact your bank and raise a dispute from them"
"Unfortunately we won't be able to help you with this"
"While Netflix is specific to region/country due to content licensing and currency of the payment. We have noticed the activity on your account does not match the same & this activity is not aligned with the practices to the country you are in."
"If you wish to stream then kindly make the payment"

PingMe app is out of numbers for Turkey Netflix, just tried :(

    • +1

damn - just logged on and tried too - yes it seems out - not sure how long this will last

      • did you guys use another sms provider? Stuck in same boat

  • +1

Gonna wait and see what happens over the next month or so.
Seems like they're cracking down on geopricing "abusers".
I'm not going to give them another $10 to cancel 5 days into the month.
    moves back to plex

so has anyone using purely Turkey GC had accounts frozen or cancelled this week? looks like it's only for CCs?

    • I agree. All reports relate to CC's not one for GC's I have seen and my account is still good

  • +1

I downloaded PingMe and bought 5 coins.

But on both web and iPhone, with and without a VPN on there are no Turkish numbers available for verification (other countries work fine)

    • I'm having the same issue, Did you ever manage to get a Turkish number?

      • +1

@Mick83 @bobneil they will restock soon from time to time, just keep an eye out!

        • still no stock

          • @BLAIL: I ended up using https://sms-activate.org/en, $1 top up and an activation is around 50c

            • @Mick83: I ended up buying a slot on a monthly basis…but turns out it's already dead after a week

              Edit: Nigeria Slot, not Turkey

              • @BLAIL: Yeah, I also signed up to Nigeria and was booted, Türkiye working fine for now.

                • @Mick83: if it lasts more than a couple weeks, can i potentially buy a slot off you?
