      No

    • S23 is an excellent phone. I can't think of one thing that Pixel is better at that's a non-negotiable…

Marginally better at photo quality? Subjective.
      Marginally better (clean) OS? subjective.

    • This seems more like a "sidegrade" more than an upgrade

  • I've never done this trade-in caper before. The two phones we are looking at trading in have always been in cases and have always had screen protectors on them. So they are in pretty good condition. Should I take off the screen protectors prior to doing the return? TIA.

    • +1

They won't care my friend. So long as it's unlocked and arrives on time, they will be happy.

  • +2

Will it be an upgrade from pixel 7?

    • Keen to know this as well. Recently bought pixel 7 for 499, would it be worth to pay extra $50 out of pocket by trading in pixel 7?

    • +3

Really good question. 7 has slightly bigger 90hz AMOLED, Li-Ion battery, faster wireless charging (and reverse charging), IP68. 8a has slightly smaller OLED but 120hz, slightly bigger but Li-Po battery, faster Ten3 processor, newer Bluetooth, IP67, a few more pixels in the cameras and much longer firmware updates. Plus new warranty.
One way of looking at it, it's like rolling over the lease on a car. For $1 a week, you get to have a new phone, all the time.
I would do it, but there are Pros and Cons

      • Good breakdown. You would have sold me.

  • On the email I received it says:
If our Returns Centre does not receive your device(s) within 20 days, we will charge the pre-authorised hold on your credit/debit card, for the trade-in value offered for your order.

On the confirmation page of the website it says:
If our Returns Centre does not receive your device(s) in 20 days; your credit card will be charged the amount equal to the JB eGift Card issued.

    Which is it?

    • +2

Damn, I'd like to know too!

I think I waited too long to trade in my Pixel 3, its still going strong after 5yrs. Only have tiny green pixels in top left corner issue, no OS updates and the USB C port is loose now. Otherwise a been an awesome phone. Would be keen to try out the trade in work around as a "Pixel 4" though.

    • +1

It's the same thing, the pending charge is the same amount as the JB Hi-Fi GC.

They can't refund the GC, so they will take that amount from your card to cover it in the event you don't send in your device.

    • Lets say trade in value is $1

JB eGift Card issued amount $1

      =

trade-in value offered for your order $1

so they can legally to charge your card $1, if you do not return

  • +2

When they say up to two weeks for the $200 gift card.. how long does it usually take? I want to be able to use it for another pixel 8a itself

    • +2

I was told by a store rep that you receive the gift card when you pick up the item in store, which means you cannot use it for the phone.

I assume you get the gift card via email.

    • +1

For Pixel 8 when it was released, it was emailed out to all (from memory) exactly on the 14th day.

  • Can you just trade in a pixel 5 for $1 and never send it in? Looks like you would just be charged $1, but unsure if they would try to take back the $300 trade in bonus or the $200 GC?

  • Can they reset an iphone or do i have to reset it first (not normally an iphone user so not sure how that all works). I got a 3rd gen SE that i accidentally bricked. Long story, restored the wrong apple backup to it now i cant reset it. Otherwise it is basically brand new.

Was going to just bin it. Got it for next to nothing as an ex display so no great loss.

    • +1

It does say in the terms that you need to remove all locks and security settings, but if you select the option to say it doesn't power on, I doubt that would be an issue.

      • If you pick that option then they say they have no use for it and you cant get the offer.

  • +1

guys, lets discuss case and tempered glass, not the google $50 one on a $349 phone

    • +4

Spigen Liquid Air is $25, through PROGadgets or their eBay store (check for coupons).

Nuglas or amFilm for guaranteed quality TG screen protectors (eBay and Amazon), generic from China is cheaper but quality varies a lot.

    • +2

What's there to discuss? $5 for 3x screen protector and $5 case off AliExpress or Temu. Case closed.

  • +1

So I bought 10 $100 gift cards from this deal:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/842865

Can I use multiple gift cards in the 1 transaction on the jbhifi checkout page?

    • Yes,

    • Have you tried paying with Ultimate gift cards? It says gift card number must be 18 digits. Card number appearing on the gift card is 16 digits only. Wonder does it work online or in-store only…

      • +2

You need to convert it to jbhifi gift cards

  • I do like the noticeable bubble like curvature

    • I feel like the prominent curves align closer to google's os design language. It's probably going to be a bit nicer in hand I recon. It's also probably more attractive to iPhone users, for the ones that may have been thinking about an entry point into android.

  • Is it possible to do the trade in in store? Or do we need to send it in?

    • Don't think so.

It's through SquareTrade, not sure they have offices or accept drop offs. They do provide a prepaid shipping label though.

    • You have to post in the device. They don't process trade in in store. You do online. They email you return instructions and you post.

  • Tempted to trade in the Samsung flip4 which I hate for this. Just unsure about the battery life on these new pixels. The old ones (at least till 6) were pretty crap

    • Still pretty crap. The Tensor chip is Samsung built and design isn't power efficient.

  • +2

    Thanks OP,

    Good deal.
Trading in my pixel 4 of 5 years that i bought for $199 in 2019 using another ozb deal. Also used a stack of ultimate gift cards for split payment.

Tried to get $200 gift card in store "upon purchase" as advertised. They store initially issued one but then later called to let me know they were cancelling it, apparently they need to issue one upon collection of the product (as you can otherwise cancel the pre-purchase and run away with the GC). So wording there is a bit off.

    • So if you don't send the trade in device, you pay for the trade up amount but do you keep $200 gift card and $300 extra trade in bonus?

      • +1

My comment only relates to the $200 JB Hifi gift card, which is emailed in 2 weeks if purchased online (i thought i would try and get it quicker in store).

Not related to the $300 trade in discount code which you get beforehand, and scan at time of payment.

        Hopefully that makes sense

    • Interesting. Theoretically what's stopping people from getting the gift card upon collection, using it, and then returning the phone?

      • +1

Have you ever tried returning at JB you need legal representative.
        'the seal is scratched'

        • Lol guess that's enough of a detractor lol

  • -3

Can someone please advise how's the battery performance?
I am considering to switch from Samsung S21.
    Thanks!

    • +2

No-one has the phone to get a real world answer. It's going to be like most other google phones at a guess, based on the size of the battery. It's going to get you a whole day, but you will be charging it overnight. If you are a heavy user, you might be charging it in the arvo. If you are a light user, you could potentially have some percentage the following morning.

    • No matter what iPhone battery life will always be better though Snapdragon 8 come close

  • Any suggestions for a safe way to sell the $200 voucher at a discount?

    • +1

I would use ozbargain's marketplace. No option can guarantee a clean sale without in-person cash sale, but I have sold a gift card here, and it was super smooth. Would def do it again. Gumtree is filled with scammers for this kind of thing.

A sure fire sale would be to price it at $100

  • Can someone briefly explain the process for trade-in deal to buy pixel 8a please?

Jbhifi website seems to be separate from trade-in. Which one to do first and where to get the trade-in code?

    • +1

Do the SquareTradeup trade in, all the codes and instructions come after that

    • As stated by @xitrapharlax , google Jbhifi trade in, and use SquareTrade up. Once you complete that, you will receive an email with the $xx trade in code. You will also receive an email noting promotions, one being the pixel 8a. Click that option in the email link, and it will then email you a voucher code.

Essentially you just add the trade in money as a gift card (will receive the pin when you download the gift card within the email), and then the $300 bonus as a promo code.

      • Although whatever amount it works out including plus $300 you need to spare that amount on your credit card for them to hold until your frying pan arrives to them not telping you how long they hold this money in your card so in other words if your trade in works out $600 they will charge your credit card $600 if not no deal

  • Used a old iphone 6 with a peeling screen I had lying around and got $1 for it. I have to say that's a pretty good trade in!

    • -2

Then you better make sure you have spare $301 that you can forsake in your credit card

      • Will the $300 coupon also included in this? I thought they only charge $1

  • When I select my Pixel 4 XL, it doesn't give me the option to say it's cracked, just that it turns on. (Seems like most Pixels)

Does that mean they don't care about condition for Pixels? or not worth the risk?

    • +1

That’s right i would believe. Last time i traded a 1st gen Apple Watch that wasn’t starting up for more than a year. No questions about the working while going through the process and there was no debit from my card.

  • +1

Done this process twice with a $1 trade in, didn't send the phone in, used the bonus voucher and only got charged $1 on my card

    • I'm assuming you mean twice through past deals, not twice this time seeing this deal hasn't been longer than a week.

That also means you haven't been blacklisted even though you did not send in the device and took advantage of some sort of trade in deals. That's good news.

      • Possibly blacklisted but I just use other people's email address e.g. the wife

        • The trade in requires an ID, which means you need not just a new email but also an ID. Did you switch that up as well?

  • Wondering if it is worth it to trade in my iphone 12 pro max for $480 + $300. Would need to pay just $69 then.

    • +5

I use an iPhone 11 for work, but everything else in my world is android based. Its really going to be if you want to change ecosystem. For me, I have used google pixels since nexus days (if you count that as google days) and cant imagine going over to iOS. From my perspective, if you are looking to move to android, $69 is a no brainer. It's going to be a good phone, with supposedly 7 years of os and security updates.

      https://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Google-Pixel-8a,Ap…

Smaller phone, with a lower resolution, but brighter screen with a higher refresh rate.
The battery is larger, but charges slower than the iPhone.
You will lose a camera, but are moving to google processing for photos.

It's going to be a shift for you, even as simply as having the buttons on the other side of the phone, and moving to google or similar storage.

In my opinion, people who move to android are really taken by its capacity to be modified and customised.

P.S - this is a mid-year, mid-tier phone, it's not going to be as refined as the pixel 8pro or the upcoming 9pro. It's going to probably feel a bit lighter, and potentially a bit cheaper, being more plastic based that the glass iPhone pro max.

      • Excellent write up 👍

      • Thanks for the detailed answer mate. Appreciate it. Also, would you prefer 128 or 256 GB of storage? I know it is subjective, but hows clould storage like?

        • +1

          It's a fair question.
Looking at my pixel 6 storage, it says the android system is using 21gb of storage. So essentially I have 100gb of storage to use. I currently have about 35gb spare, which I sometimes use for offline music or video when travelling.

Google One is good as it's super integrated. It just does all of the back ups etc overnight, most likely the same as iPhone.
I have the basic 100gb cloud plan, which for a regular user is heaps, and I think it costs about $25ish a year?

I really was considering the 256gb, but I could just move all of my audiobooks to the cloud and potentially have an extra 15gb spare, so maybe I just need to use what I have more efficiently.

          • @StackableSnacks: Just ordered the 128 GB one for just $69. Happy days :). Thanks for your help mate. Cheers!

            • +2

@DealBreaker85: Congrats mate. Im just assuming you haven't spend much time in the android space, but when you are feeling confident, feel free to DM if you have any questions or want to start looking at custom apps and launchers.

              • @StackableSnacks: Sure mate I'll let you know when I get the phone. Thanks for that. Have a good weekend. Cheers!

  • Did the trade in, got the email egift card but when I try and open it, I get gateway timeout. I guess it's broken for the evening.

copy the link address and open in incognito, it downloads the gift card pdf with your details. This worked for me after a few failed attempts of just clicking the link

Can we club JB Hi Fi perk of get $30 on $300???

    • I've just got it in the cart but the coupon code seems to apply :) just trying to get my trade in gift card code to check out but it keeps timing out.

      • +3

Just found out in TnC. Not possible….

Discount of $30 applies to the current price of products. Excludes Apple products, Game Consoles, Foxtel services, JB Hi-Fi Mobile Plans and Services, Miele & Asko agency products, Dell Built to Order, Trading Cards, Pre-Paid Cards & Gift Cards, Pre-Orders, JB Hi-Fi Mobile Extras and Delivery Services.

  • +1

The note on the trade in page references being charge for the amount of the gift card, not just the $1 trade in.

"If our Returns Centre does not receive your device(s) in 20 days; your credit card will be charged the amount equal to the JB eGift Card issued."

Edit: nevermind, got the 'gift card' and it's valued at $1 lol

  • Help, does anyone know when is the trade-in bonus is supposed to apply? At check out?
I know the $200 gc is after the transaction but I'm only getting my $1 credit from the trade-in gift card.

    • once you do the whole trade in process (like verify ID, blah blah blah) they will send you a coupon code. you put that into the cart to get -300 (and a $1 e-gift card for your $1 device)

      • They haven't issued me the $1 gift card yet; think it's pending verification of the old phone.

  • Anyone know if this would be much of an upgrade over the 6 pro?

    • +1

I have the pixel 6, and bought in on the trade-in offer.
The p6 security and upgrade is due to expire at the end of the year I believe, which was a part of my decision making. You will be losing a camera, but fortunately the p7a had killer blind test results according to mkbhd, and the 8a takes the exact same camera unit.

The other main thing was that I use my phone outside alot, and the max brightness on the 6 is pretty rough, and this 8a has significantly higher peak brightness.

I think the biggest thing to consider, or at least what I was considering is that the pixel 9 is going to be way more expensive than the 8a. The previous preorder for the pixel 8 was a $300 bonus, so I'm expecting I will still be paying upward of $800-$1000 for a pixel 9. Walking away with the 8a for $399 plus $200 bonus gc feels like a steal.

  • Can somebody confirm if we must send the trade in device? If we don't, do we still get $300 bonus and $200 gift card?

    • You get $300 discount once you place an order for phone in jbhifi. You get a further $200 gift card when receiving (or collecting) phone after "release date".

      Deadline for sending old phone can be after these processes;

the only question is whether they charge your card the pre-authorization or pre-authorization+ $300 or any other value…

      • That is the main question else buying pixel 8 would be better…

  • +2

FYI Unidays deal is now working for Pixel 8A, $721 delivered + $200 store credit.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/844799

  • Maybe a bit of a dumb question, but does JB HiFi send out phones a day or two earlier to arrive on launch date? I know this happens in some markets, never bought a pre-release phone in Australia before.

  • Trade in value is $300 for my pixel 7, so all I have to pay out of pocket is $250?

Or I can trade in a $1 phone and sell my pixel 7 for about $400-$450?

    What's the play here?

    • +1

      play second

trade in a $1 phone and sell my pixel 7 for about $400-$450

      • Where to find a phone for $1?

        • +1

          You don't.

Just put a trade in for whatever phone or watch that they'll pay $1 for.

Collect the bonus $300 trade in. Then don't send in the "pretend" $1 trade in item

They'll only charge you the $1 for that fake trade in

          • +1

            @Whatisthatvelvet: They charge $1 or $300+$1?

            • +3

@Rebu: Whatever device you decide to trade in, the value of it (eg $1) will be held on your credit card. You will then be sent an email with the bonus $300 trade in. Use the bonus trade in then don't send in the $1 trade in device. You'll then be charged the $1.

  • +1

    What colour everyone is ordering?

    • +1

      White

    • Obsidian then changed mind and re-ordered Porcelain.

  • How are people's Pixel 8s going with battery? That is my biggest concern so I want to see how people's experiences are with the Tensor G3?

  • Does this event include 256GB?

    • +1

I ordered a 256GB model, but it was only available in black (obsidian). Everything else in the deal was the same regarding trade-in. The email with the $300 trade-in bonus works for either the 128GB or the 256GB model. I traded in two phones (for myself and spouse) and got one of each, 128GB and 256GB

  • The trade in value of the pixel 5 in $1, so if I don't send in my Pixel 5 they will eventually just charge $1 on the card?
