Haggle direct with Optus staff to get a better deal?

Hi all

Has anyone had any success with bargaining with Optus Store/online staff for a discount on a plan?

The reason I ask is because they offer the Xperia Z for new customers on a $60 + $3 (handset repayment)/mth plan, with 1.5GB data, $650 calls, unlimitd TXT and Optus mobile calls

Returning customers get 1GB data extra (2.5GB data), and no handset repayment ($72 saved over 24 months).

If they can offer it to returning customers it obviously isn't losing money — it's just tempting the returning customers to sign up again. HOWEVER the trick would be to actually be able to obtain these "discounts" without actually becoming a "returning customer", by haggling/bargaining direct with Optus staff?

Thanks in advance

PS.

I know it's cheaper by buying outright and then going with LiveConnected/Vaya etc, but I want 24 mths warranty given it's a plan, and also the convenience of walking into an Optus store if there's something wrong.

  • Why would you bother with trying to bargain with Optus when you can get a better mobile plan with tpg, amayasim or another virtual network operator?

Edit: sorry, Didn't notice your P.S comment. I still don't think the convenience factor is worth it.

    • Because all the MVNOs you mentioned don't offer a 4G plan that is sufficiently good in value in my opinion (except Vaya, which will then give me 2.5GB data ($7 bolt on) for $24.60).

Also I am reluctant to reduce the warranty period from 24 to 12 months by doing BYO.

I don't know about the sales staff themselves but one of my mates who works in the accounting section said that whilst he can't get me cheaper rates, he can add extras to the account. I can't guarantee whether it would work for you though. You may need to already have an Optus number to actually be entered in the system for the returning customer deal.
Give it a shot, worst case scenario they say no

      Hi mskram

I asked tonight. They were able to knock 2 months's access price off ($60 x 2 = $120) which more than offsets the monthly handset repayments, but I would be even happier if they gave 2.5GB data and also just knocked off the $3 monthly handset repayment, hence the question :)

Apparently the phone sales couldn't do what I requested…

I did say I was on the Optus network but not with Optus themselves (I'm with LiveConnected atm)

      Any other thoughts appreciated.

Prove it… i think you are telling porky pies!
Given Optus has a very strict credit policy lately (since management changed last year)
I honestly think you are talking crap… there is no way they would give you a brand new handset like the one at a 50% discount.. NO WAY!!
I am happy to be proven wrong by you showing us a bill or something that has the prices you have stated on it.. otherwise i honestly think you are lying

      • I dunno.. .anything is possible. I just spent the last 10 months at 50% off with Vodafone and now they just gave me a pass on my contract letting me out with no penalties so yeah anything is possible.

Now I just need to figure out which provider to go with ;)

  • Have managed to get a credit of $50 for a lost phone and the inconvenience of having to replace my phone and sim card. As well they have taken $10 off the monthly plan $99 per month taking it down to $89 they said they can only do this for 10 mths which makes it $100 off. As the contract gets closer to the end I may ring them again and see if they are offering me anything else. Can only try.

  • Are you talking about the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium Chrome? If so you can get it from Optus for $53.75 a month with 5.5GB of data included using the Friends and Family deal. $63.75 a month for 10GB of data, $50 a month with 1GB of data.
