Best gaming headset?

Hi. Trying to buy a gaming headset for my son-he's a hardcore laptop gamer and I'm just his dufus dad who wouldn't know his arse from his elbow in that world. Any info would be greatly appreciated. THX.

This headset is a decent wireless headset.

If you want a wired headset sounds like he'd love anything razer.

  • What is needed is:

1: Something that is comfortable. Most important and personal preference.

2: Something with a mic. Generally any mic will do but if it is really bad people may not be able to hear you.

3: Whatever audio quality you like/want to pay for. Anything will do for gaming, this is about what individuals find acceptable.

  • "hardcore laptop gamer" That is an oxymoron.
Any branded headset with mic will be fine. My $30 Logitech does the job nicely and I'm a 'Hardcore pc gamer'.

    Plantronics Gamecom 780

  • Personally I would not opt for any "gaming headsets".

I would firstly consider if his laptop has a built in mic, if it does I would not go for a headset with a built in mic (this widens your choices of headphones + in most cases better sound quality).

How much were you looking on spending? I would recommend if you go down the option of headphones without a built in mic to pick up some closed headphones which I find are better for gaming (bit more bass than open headphones). I used a desktop mic and Beyerdynamic DT250's and am very happy with them.

Decent place to get some ideas on headphones - http://headphones.com.au/pbrowse?catID=1&subCatID=3&sort=rec… - I personally didn't buy from here as much better prices online.

  • Thanks for the replies guys. I was hoping to spend around $100. He's been using phones and a desk top mike for ages and has got it in his head to get a headset. He wanted to rush into EB and grab some Turtle beach ones, hence my original question. Thanks to 'oringal' I think I'll give the Pantronic 780's a go. $79 pickup from CPL seems like a decent buy. Thanks again for your replies, I appreciate the help.

  • If you don't have a sound card just go with a gaming headset like the Logitech G35 etc. They are good value if you get it from logitechshop.com.au etc

  • If you haven't purchased a set yet, I've started to use SteelSeries Siberia V2's, very comfortable, retractable mic, decent sound quality and you can get them for between $70-$85 depending on where you look.

You could also go into JBHiFi and get some SkullCandy headsets, but I'm not sure of the quality of them since never used them.

Turtle Beach are becoming really popular but not sure about sound quality.

Check out Officeworks for TTE headsets for gaming, once again, feel and sound I'm unaware of.

    Logitechs are good too.
