Dale Purves has a good bio: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dale_Purves Don't know if the book will be all over my head, er brain, but what the heck, for $0.00 I grabbed it.

      I wouldn't worry, neuroscience ain't brain surgery! ;)

Reminded me of the joke whose punchline was: Waiter when is my salad coming? It's not rocket salad you know. :)

Wow! I'll say! (from the Amazon info page … "Dale Purves is Professor of Neurobiology, Psychology and Neuroscience, and Philosophy at Duke University")

If the book reads well, I'm gonna write an in depth review for it, and if he's looking to break the existing ebook pricing model, I'll send him a cash donation to help with the cause.

Of course, I grabbed a copy. Great find, OP!

Great find, @rennx - the more people who understand how little we know about the workings of the 2lb of gooey gel in our bonces, the better.

Next stop, more people who arrive at an understanding that we are not the conscious authors of our own actions: that our conscious mind is a veil that masks the fact that we have no idea why we make the decisions we make. (It recently took me fifty hours of pretty intensive research to change my opinion about the existence of free will, and accept that it is an illusion… hence the proselytising!)

      your choice mate.

    • Free will & destiny (or fate) is forever contentious HOT topics. Without cluttering these pages, if you like my view on that, pls email me on [email protected] and I'll email you back my writing on this topic.

Discussion aims to find the truth whereas debate aims to see who wins. I'm only interested in discussion, not debate. So be aware of these. Spirituality, religion & politics are SO PERSONAL that they often brings intense conflictis of opinions (& sadly sometimes severe irrational behaviour).

    • citations needed**

    • I assume you're referring to recent(ish) research that shows the sub-conscious mind makes the decision, which the conscious then rationalises? But, even so, I don't see how that rules out free will.

I'd keep your mind open on this one: we're still discovering just how amazing these brains of ours are and how they work.

      • I wouldn't question him, he's spent a WHOLE 50 hours thinking about it.

  • Thanks OP! :D

  • THANKS FOR THE PO! :)
