HTC One XL, cracked screen, still under contact. What to replace it with?

So my HTC One XL 4g with Telsta got damaged over the weekend. Screen is cracked and sharp glass bits are coming off. Now I got it thru the Telstra Friends Family offer (thanks to ozbargain!), currently paying $10/month for the handset(after bonus MRO rebate and I still have 15 months of the contract left) and $10/month for the $39 staff plan. Called Fonebiz (official HTC repair centre) and was quoted $310 to fix (may take up to 5 weeks) with 90 days warranty. Called a few local shops and they quoted $260 using non-HTC parts.

Called Telstra and found out that to terminate contract I will have to pay $421 (as bonus MRO will not apply to cancellations). Was told to just go out and buy a handset outright and just continue to pay the $10/month for the next 15 months (total $150). 15 months later renew contract on a new latest-and-greatest-phone.

Im thinking of taking his suggestion and just buy a handset around $100.
Any other suggestions? Any suggestions which phone?

Since the parts are under $30 on ebay, I would try and repair.
Otherwise, the $50 Lumia at Target or $40 Ascend y201 at Coles would be my picks for cheap and cheerful replacement smartphone.

    • Im told that the $30 part is just the glass, I need the glass and the digitiser which on ebay are about $100. I saw the diy youtube videos and am not feeling confidnet to do it myself :/

So for the next 15 months you either will get a $100 phone(big downgrade) or spend an additional $160 and get to use your One XL.

    • Good point!

  • are you in Melbourne? if yes we can change your screen for $170 and 3 months warranty

      The O.P is in NSW.
With most users it displays where they come from when you click their username.
