New SIM but retain plan

I need to get a new SIM card for my new smart phone (prepaid) and want to retain my old number but don't want to lose my old plan (Telstra). Is it possible to do this, i.e. retain my plan when my number moves across to the new SIM card.

    Probably. Just rock up to one of their stores and get your SIM changed. Another carrier did something similar for me when the old SIM failed.

    Yep, just head into any Telstra store and ask them to do a SIM swap. They'll arrange a new SIM on the spot, free of charge. I did this recently when switching to a micro SIM for my iPhone; easy and quick (unlike Telstra typically).

      Thanks everyone. Telstra says they can do what I want but I just want to be sure that my current, but old, plan won't change. Sometimes what one consultant tells you on the phone turns out to be a bit different when you try to do it.

    OK - go to a Telstra shop grab a blank sim in the size required,tell them you are getting/or have a new phone.

    1.There is no charge- will be quick and polite. (has been for me in the past)Take the blank sim home.

    2.Back up your contacts from your OLD sim to the new sim

    3.Go into webchat with telstra this way you have a written record if something goes wrong ;).

    4.Tell them you have a new blank sim as you needed a different one for your new phone.

    5.They will ask for the sim serial number of the NEW sim

    6.The NEW sim will most likely become active straight away (yes there can be a delay,but has been pretty well instant for me) i keep it in the new phone ready to go (old sim will lose signal)

    Or just move your contacts from the SIM to the phone, rock up with both phones, and tell them you are switching phones. They will provide you with a new SIM, check your ID, go tap tap tap on their computer and transfer your account to the new SIM on the spot. Then transfer your contacts back.

    Honestly, just go into the store, say I need my sim changed because it does not work in my new phone, they will give you a new one end of story.

    Thanks again everyone, we went to the Telstra shop today, they changed over the sim card and the number and retained the old plan. All good.
