What does grey import actually mean?

Hi All,
Probably a stupid question but what is the actual operational difference
between Aus stock and grey import phones?
Say for a Samsung S3 do grey imports have different menus or something?
Do they have bloatware?
How are they different operation wise?
For someone like me who is not very tech savvy would I be able to tell the difference?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
nettie

Not necessarily any of those things. They could be functionally identical or not. Grey import means it's coming from a non-official channel (i.e. not the appointed distributor), so the after sales service arrangements are likely to be different.

  • How are they different operation wise?

the hardware and/or firmware might be slightly different or they could be completely identical. you need to check the specs on whatever you are buying.

    • And also to add, if there is a local merchant handling the sales, they would normally warranty for compatibility with Australia, but there may be a few quirks, e.g. you get/need an adapter for Australia power sockets. Sometimes the local merchant may also handle the warranty returns. The devil is in the details.
