Hotel overbooked

I am interested to know if what people think about this. A few weeks ago I booked a room and show tickets at Jupiters Casino. I received a call last week to say that the show had been suddenly cancelled so they would credit me for that - we were looking forward the show but happy to get the gift card in place of it. I received a call today to say that now they are overbooked so I can no longer stay there unless I wanted to change my date otherwise they will put me in another hotel. We didn't want to change the date so we have chosen to stay at the other hotel they offered. Can't understand how there isn't a room available now when I booked it last month - has anyone else experienced anything like this?

All in all we have probably ended up with quite a good deal but just not sure how they can stuff up like this

    They recently had a group deal offer for room and show. Perhaps they weren't expecting big response.
    What date and replacement was offered ?

    i think the economics would be straight forward. they probably found someone who was willing to pay more $$ than you for a given room

    I am not complaining as I think I only paid $125 for room and show tickets (a facebook offer) and they are giving me $120 gift card for cancelling the show. The hotel we are staying at looks quite good and maybe worth more than Jupiters. It just had me thinking how could this happen and luckily it suits us to stay at the other hotel. They offered us QT in surfers or crowne plaza broadbeach. We have stayed at crowne before and it was average so we went with crowne.

    We were booked for tonight and were offered last night or sunday night. Someone told me that hotels have agreements with airlines and sometimes overbook hoping the airlines won't use the rooms

    Hotels overbook, it's common practice. It's wrong but it happens. Happened to me once, when it did I showed them my loyalty card and walked out the door. 1 minute later had a phone call to say they had a free room. Burnt that bridge though.

    An empty room earns nothing, so if they book one extra room, there is probably a good chance a room will free up.

    Should've stomped your feet and demanded Sofitel 6* across the road so you could get to the casino by monorail. Crowne is stranded between surfers and broadbeach with nothing within walking distance.
    QT is a good funky choice, north end of surfers, breakfast is the best.
