  • is this very good price syd-auck?

  • Comparing to the $300 QF charges, yes.
It's not the cheapest JQ has gotten, went down to $99 a few weeks back.
Other airlines usually hover around the $250 IIRC during non-sales.

  • My mum who lives in NZ said that AirNZ had NZD$106 from Wellington to Melbourne earlier this week. More proof we are getting gouged….

I had previously flown on Emirates at $99 each way into Auckland as they were selling capacity.

    Reasonable price, but not great

    • I don't think it is wise to compare one-way flights going in different directions as it will always be cheaper to fly one-way ex NZ rather than ex AU.

This is because the Australian Government slaps every international ticket departing from an Australian port with an international passenger movement charge of about AUD$55.00. The equivalent NZ government charge departing from an NZ port is about NZ$13.48. The government charges are only paid on the outbound flights for the relevant country so on a return flight you pay one AU charge and one NZ charge. There are also airport charges on both departing and arrival port which you pay in both directions.

If you look at the breakdown of a one-way flight Sydney to Auckland:

New Zealand Passenger Service Charge (KK) AU$15.20
Australian Int'l Passenger Service Charge (WY) AU$26.39
Australian Passenger Movement Charge (AU) AU$55.00

So for these $119 flights, Jetstar is only receiving $22.41 for the entire flight. The rest goes to the airports and the government. I'd say that's a pretty darn good price.

      • Was the $119 including all the taxes - in my experience, no. My $99 Emirates (for 4 passengers, inc 1 minor) was $792 + $382 in taxes.

I suspect they now have to include taxes, but I hear what you are saying.

  • Pretty good price but hoping to get a flight from Syd - ChristC.

  • i got my jetstar Gold Coast to Auck Return for $250 from expedia.co.jp

  • scored $98 return to melbourne from bris for a weekend. great :)
