Dental Work Overseas

Has anyone had dental work done in Bali, Thailand or Singapore recently? I would be interested in feedback, particularly implants. I just wonder if hygiene would be much better in Singapore

  • I have asked this question. View the links and advise on the thread below.

  • Ive had dental work done in Japan. Very much cheaper, however, everything is done on the government stroke so dentists take their sweet time to do things. It takes weeks and about five visits to get them to complete a filling.

    • I had a heap of work done when I lived in Japan. I put off going to the dentist in aus for 5 years. moved to japan was there for nearly 4 years before someone said dentistry was very inexpensive (I thought it would be expensive -no reason why i thought that, I was just ignorant) so I had 4 visits to the dentist who made a bridge, 4 or 5 fillings, cleaning, etc and all up about $300.

It's the same with glasses in Japan. you could get prescription glasses (basic frame) for $40. meanwhile in australia (this is nearly 10 years ago) a basic pair was over $100.

With glasses it is supply and demand. a lot of /most Japanese people wear glasses so in a shopping mall there will be a few glasses shops. there is competition.

Aus has seen (no pun intended) glasses prices fall due to increased competition.

  • I had a bridge and wisdom tooth extraction in Singapore. My parents had implants . they were very happy. So was I.
Disclaimer: dentist is my friend's spouse.

It depends on what you are looking for in terms of dental work done overseas. If it is in terms of price, fees are on par with Australian dentists . He is however a fellow of the Australian college of dental surgeons and also in Canada and the us. His dental practice won a customer service award for healthcare last year. Bear in mind that you will not be able to claim rebates from insurers here.

If you want speed, professionalism and attention and care, I had my bridge and wisdom teeth extraction done all within the space of a week. I had not problems with eating and no infections. He had me on a course of antibiotics to ensure that infection would not pose a problem. For some people, the turnaround time is more important than the cost as time is money! Had to mention this, this being OzB. You can check his clinic out on http://www.specialistdentalgroup.com/

  • thank you very much

  • We have/had regular dental work down in Bali and Vietnam (Saigon)for the past 10 years Have had no problems. Very hygienic and very cost effective. Dental fillings au$20 porcelain crowns $50-$100 bridge work (over 3 days) $300. Can provide contacts if you need.

    • Im heading to saigon at the end of the year. What do you recommend over there? Thanks :)

    • Davhulme, I would appreciate it if you could give me the details on both please. Thank you

    • Dear davhulme, can you please provide me with information regarding Bali Dental you used. I am going over in July and need bridge work done!!! I would really appreciate any recommendations you might have.

    • where dO YOU GO IN VIETNAM?

  • that would be fantastic if you could give me the details. Was Bali better than Saigon?

  • Whatever you do don't go to Cambodia to do it. My friend's father was suppose to go to Vietnam to get his teeth done but his relatives from Cambodia talked him out of it during his stay there and was convinced it was better at a lower price. He's back in Aus now and it's been about 5 months and he's in agony pain!

  • Thanks for letting me know, poor man

    HI guys,
I'm a dentist, I have seen some great work come out of Bali etc, but I have also seen some very poor work. The quality of the materials used would be much poorer than what is used here in Australia. the crowns are usually non-precious metal (so if you are getting them done overseas, ask for full gold under the porcelain).
also there is no warranty with the work, especially with major work such as implants, most dentists here would not touch it if the work fails.
do extensive research prior to picking the surgery.
in Singapore there are many international dentists working there, so in terms of quality and work, it should be much better than Bali and Thailand.
if you need help getting work done, im in Sydney and can help you out.
    email [email protected]

    good luck

    • When ever I go to Dentist here I always had the feeling that they must be using precious metal for everything. :) Now I know why the bills were so high every time. Having paid $3500 a year for private insurance, I always had to bear the bigger part of my Dentists bills. According to my experience the Dentist prices were much higher in USA. But I never paid a single cent out of pocket for any medical or dental things while I was living in US. It was 100% covered by the free insurance we get from the companies I worked there.
In here the expensive cover is nothing when something happens to you and had to go to a hospital or dentists.

There is no warranty on any work conducted in Australia either!

The best you can do is complain to a toothless tiger watchdog agency that may or may not get anything done.

I found a quality Dentist in Penang, Malaysia and her prices and skills are amazing (trained in Germany), very satisfying I don't have pay the maintenance costs on some overcharging dentist driving a Porsche 26C around Sydney.

      • HI dannyhc, my husband and I are going to Malaysia in January and were hoping to get some dental work done. Can you give me the details of your dentist in penang so we can make contact. many thanks.. I had some dental work done in bali 2 years ago….3 crowns still looking good.

  • my mate came back from shanghai while working there for a year, he had one of his wisdoms taken out because he was scared not to only pay a few grand and under gas in Melbourne. his work mate over there convinced him to do it because it started playing up again. he got it out and didnt even need to go under just an injection and he didn't feel anything. it all cost him about 150 aud approx.. his over the moon and never felt better (more money for OZbargaining)

But its only better if you know someone that is local to guide you no matter what country you go to.

Please be careful! Your health > saving money.

    • Indeed. If something bad happened after you return to Australia, it could probably end up costing more than getting it done locally in the first place. Dont forget this is your body your'e dealing with, not a TV.

I have a mate who's dad went to the Philippines for a complete set of permanent teeth, not sure but I think he paid about 10-20k and probably saved alot more, however he hasn't had a problem 4 years down the track and hasn't looked back. I think he even came back with a wife too.

I went to Bali and was very successful and cheap. I have written a blog about who I used here.

    • Thanks for sharing.
Very useful information and well written.
      Saved your link

  • This is such a terrible idea.

That being said, dentists here charge way too much money.

  • well I have some very disturbing news - my friend had 2 lots of dental work done in Denpasar - a well known clinic - the last was done August 2014 and she was in excruciating pain during and after the procedure - she had been back home for 3 weeks and became extremely ill one morning, an ambulance was called and she passed away later that evening in the hospital. She was unable to be revived. An autopsy was done and it was proven that she had contracted septacemia due to the dental work

That is messed up and an absolute reason as to why you should have no medical procedures done in 2nd and 3rd world countries.

  • I agree, no matter how much recommendation I was given I would not have any work done either

  • Just want people to know what a truly positive overseas dental work I have just come home from.
Yes it is sooo confusing and depressing to work out the best possible solution when it comes to health, cost, time and trust you need to put into the people you choose. Yes you need to do your homework!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had 21 teeth extracted, all 6 on 6 (top and bottom) with bone grafting for strength on all implants.
I can not falt the service I received in any way.

I hope this post can help others in some way..
