DSE point and shoot camera on special, is it any good for holiday photos?

Hello,

I am going overseas next week and I am after a point and shoot camera. We were planning to use the missus' family's digital camera (no idea what it is) but I came across this promotion at Dick Smith.

http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XG1183/panasonic-fh4-digital…

After looking on the Internet, I was unable to find any user feedback of any kind and so I was hoping you guys at OzBargain may have some experience or can at least tell me from the specifications whether it is worth the purchase. Or are all of these compact digital cameras fine for holiday snaps?

Regards,
Joel.

  • P&S cameras these days are incredibly good value for the price. You'd have absolutely no problem getting nice pictures from most P&S cameras. Later on you might want things like more zoom, more controls, better low light performance, better lenses, etc. but if you are just starting off, you can't go wrong with an inexpensive P&S from a known maker.

Too expensive for this model. Should be at least $10.00 less. At $88.00 you can get a FH8

  • Some things to look for in a P&S camera
**takes 2 AA batteries.. cheap and easy to swap over. a good camera last a fair while on them… always use alkaline at least or even better sanyo enerloops. seems most now take LI rechargeable?? :-(
**a camera with a viewfinder as well as a lcd screen(may be impossible to find these days?). when you have a viewfinder you can turn off the lcd scree and increase battery life. lcd screens are sometimes impossible to see outdoors in bright sunlight.
    **prefer SD card for storage.
**prefer Canon for P&S cameras but fuji, panasonic, nikon do have some good cameras too.

Officeworks and JB hifi usually have better everyday prices than DSE

Another avenue is a smartphone. An Android phone with a decent camera around 8mp will take pics as good as most dedicated cameras these days and you will have all the added features included. When I travel now I find I use my smartphone more than my compact digital camera.

  • Most lithium batt cameras have enough juice for 200~250 shots per charge (mileage varies, read reviews first) which is enough for the average traveller.
The hassle is of course, having to remember charging it every night, but what I do is usually buy a spare battery from eBay (very cheaply) and turn to that when I need extra shots.

Lithium battery cameras are usually more compact/ lightweight that the ones that use 2xAA batteries, so that's a plus.

Using a smartphone eliminates the need for a P+S camera, but uses up your battery quickly and there's also a risk of you getting your expensive smartphone pick-pocketed (especially in high crime areas, e.g parts of USA, China and Europe).

  • Thanks for the feedback guys. It looks like I shouldn't have much trouble with this camera and I will provide feedback if I end up buying it today.

On the smartphone front, I have a Nokia Lumia 920 and I intended on only using it for photos and for offline maps. The idea was to just use my Lumia for pictures but I figure getting a cheapish point and shoot camera is probably a good idea as well.

    Keep the posts coming.

  • Hi guys, just letting you know I ended up purchasing a Canon IXUS 500 HS for $93 including extended warranty. The price was reduced by a further 5% because of my Woolworths discount card.

I wasn't particularly sure whether this was a bargain or not but I liked the look and the feel and the salesperson said it was good value for money.

Looking at JB HI-FI, it's selling for $244 so it appears like I got a good deal.

    • Hey, Where'd you buy the camera from? Seems like a good price!

      • Sorry for the ridiculously late reply, but I bought the camera from Dick Smith in Bairnsdale, Victoria. It wasn't advertised.
