Somebody please help me find a bargain for mum.
It's needed for basic web browsing (YouTube, Facebook etc) and for work using Microsoft office programs.
Something reliable, reasonably fast, and something with around 500gb HD.

what is her age group? My mother in her seventies loves ipad.. you can get this for around $370, install skype and vtok and other apps - and use these to call and chat . You dont have to have 500GB if you can use cloud services .

A tablet I find, even one that comes with a keyboard dock, is not really suitable for full-on document editing.
Following a deal posted on OzBargain I paid $288 (inc1uded Windows 7 Home Prem 64 Bit $110.00 which my mother preferred), for the tower below. I installed a copy of my old Office 2007 (Home & Student), month or so back. Mum already had the screen, keyboard and mouse; just her old tower had issues. I saw MS wireless Keyboard and Mouse for between $20-$40 recently. I purchased the tower from Vision Tech. I also opted for an additional 2 years added on for $20. I managed to reinstall her favourite games too. Perhaps they have something that would suit your requirements. We have been happy with the purchase so far. My mother is in her eighties; uses it mostly for emails, photos, Facebook, YouTube, banking (paying bills) and games. She didn't want to replace the screen, mouse or keyboard as they are still all functional. Still, an idea for future gifts hey!

I'm considering replacing my big desktop PC with a Microsoft slate with the detachable keyboard. I have an ipad already but for document editing, powerpoints etc I need something better. The slate pro seems pretty powerful. The other alternative for me is a laptop, so many options these days :)
