Travel to US - where to get decent fare?

Hi All,

Hoping someone can help me.

All planning a 3 week trip to US for late Sep (21 Sep).

Was thinking SYD to LA -> LA to San Fran -> San Fran to NY -> NY to SYD.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to source a decent fare. The best I can find at this stage is:

SYD to LAX + JFK to SYD = $1714.60 (@ Dirctflights).

Will be travelling with the family (little fella is 7 now) so any suggestions on the itinerary would be appreciated as well.

Thanks

United will generally be your cheapest option. They offer a free stopover at LAX or San Francisco.

    FARE RULES TEXT
2 STOPOVERS PERMITTED ON THE PRICING UNIT
LIMITED TO 1 FREE AND 1 AT AUD 135.00.
    1 FREE IN SYD/MEL/LAX/SFO
    1 AT AUD 135.00.

A couple of years ago I went to NY with a few days stopover in San Francisco. So I think you can structure your flights for:

    SYD-LAX-NYC
    then
    NYC-SFO-SYD

    Anyway, check United's site directly.

As for itinerary, well there's a lot. Best to hit your library and pick up some Lonely Planets, then go over it with the family. The obvious choice if you are bringing a 7 year old is to hit the theme parks (Disneyland, Universal, etc.).

  • There's a big Qantas sale on at the moment. Sydney to LAX for $1249 return, or $1449 to JFK.

Unsure on their stopover rules, but the pricing is decent. See more at

  • a lot of discussion and tips here.

You are going to find it hard for cheap fares as this is NSW school holidays time. Leaving a few days earlier and coming back a few days later, if you can have junior miss school for those days - which should be ok as they are only 7, might shave a few hundred dollars off your fare, enough to pay for the accommodation for the extra days away.

You might want to check out the expedia Brazil site. (do a search here on ozbargain). They may have prices that are not impacted as much with the school holidays.

  • School holidays will not effect International flights. But a good source of information on where to stay and what to do in various places including eateries etc. is Tripadviser my wife and I swear by it and it has not let us down over the seven years we have been using it it all over the world. personally I think $1700 ish for September is not too bad a price as normally to get better deals you need to book further ahead internationally.

    • I really think you are off beam here. Although maybe its the way your are wording it.

International flight from Australia prices ARE affected by our school holidays, as this is the time most families can travel. Look at MITM's post below, package deals that dont include September.

Regular fares maybe the same, but Discounted fares, which the OP is looking for, often are not available for school holiday periods.

Airlines load manage via prices, discounting fares in lower demand times.

  • Use Kayak, Adioso and/or Skyscanner!

  • Check out this package for 10 days LAX SNF NYC - doesnt include Sept, so you may have to contact them.

Or for a few extra bux: includes LAS 13 days - doesnt include Sept, so you may have to contact them.

    How about this:

8th June - Sydney to Brisbane for $88 (Virgin Australia website)

9th June - Brisbane to Sydney
21st September - Sydney to LA
24 September - LA to San Fran
10th October - New York to Sydney

    $1279.08 (using Virgin/Delta on ifly.sabreexplore.com.au)

Total price is $1367.08 (cheaper for child) and you get a (compulsory) free weekend trip to Brisbane next month. Just need to find a flight San Fran to NYC to complete your whole trip.

    • Hi donga100,

      That's amazing.

      Couple of questions:

I tried Direct flights and the best price I get is $1441.56 instead of $1279.08. How can I get the lower fare? Also, what happens if I don't board the 9th June flight from Brisbane?

      • If you don't board the flight from Brisbane the rest of your ticket will be cancelled. This flight is necessary in order for your departure date to be considered in the lower season. The fare you are effectively booking is BNE-SFO//NYC-SYD departing 9th June. If you prefer to go somewhere else instead of Brisbane you could try Melbourne which should work out to be close to the same price. You could probably even get the total price a little cheaper if you look at other airlines for the SYD-BNE or SYD-MEL leg. $88 is not a bad price but Tiger and Jetstar often have sales.

        • Thanks donga100. How do I get the $1279 price? The best fare i can find for BNE-SYD-LAX-SFO-JFK-SYD IS $1441 with zuji.

        • You can book through ifly.sabreexplore.com.au or call Delta or Virgin. You could also try taking the quote and flight numbers to a travel agent.
