Residential Camera Security System

Hello Forum,

I am looking for a camera security system for my home and was looking for your feedback. I tried doing some research online and there are so many security systems and I am not sure which one is the right one.

My main requirements are

  1. That the camera should be able to provide good quality pictures specially during night time.
  2. 4-6 cameras.
  3. Online view
  4. Easy to install as I would be doing the installation.
  5. Budget $1000 approx.

Below are some options which I have come across:

  1. Swann

  2. Uniden

  3. Logitech

Thanks for your feedback !

  • I'm no guru on this topic but I have installed a couple of these over the past few years for home and business.

I am actually thinking to upgrade the system at our warehouse to megapixel ip based cameras and technology, any analog camera is just too blurry and too low a res to be of much use in identifying suspects or faces etc.

Swann is cheap but junk in my experience, they have a good warranty return system, but its is so slow you have to buy replacement products to get your system on air then end up with a cupboard full of spares when they fix or replace items.

Consider coppling together your own system from parts on eBay. Power over Ethernet with modestly priced 720p cameras is what I'm thinking of rolling out using a basic stand alone recorder box of which there are plenty on eBay.

The firm I work for just spent $10k on a 2 camera hd rig to watch a construction site, installed by a security company, IMHO it looks just like what can be found on eBay for $500 plus $200 per camera. I did try to tell them, but got the old story about the eBay product being junk etc by the installers.

  • If you do go swann don't forget to check their outlet store.

    • Thanks for the comments. I agree the photos are grainy specially the night ones..do you have a link for examples from ebay please ?

Something like this, although the box included with this system cannot display real time hd 25fps even on 1 camera via the box, so I'd probably dig a bit harder if I were buying.
