    Nope, the cables fine. I even purchased 2 cables to check and it works fine

  Or a faulty Ethernet interface on your computer. Try swapping various parts of your system, try another computer, try another LAN, etc. You may have to borrow equipment or go to a friend's place.

    Something within the modem is faulty, I have tried with another computer same issue. Any suggestions for a new modem?

      Wired or wireless? How much are you prepared to spend?
      For wireless either the Billion 7700n or TP-Link TD-W8960N.

      For wired perhaps Draytek Vigor 120 or TP-link 8840T

  I just purchased the D-Link DIR-865L from JB for $125 (after price match) and tried plugging it into my modem, and it did not work.

  What brand/model is the modem/router? Does it have more than 1 ethernet port?

  (Assuming you have a working ethernet port on the modem) You'll get the best results by configuring your modem into BRIDGE mode and then connecting it via an ethernet port to the WAN port on the D-Link router (and let the router handle all the processing - DHCP, wireless, ethernet switch, etc)…

  If anyone happens to know why the Ethernet connection is slow, please also tell me.

  I'd suggest you make sure you have the latest firmware for the modem/router, and latest driver for your ethernet card.

  So everyone know, it turns out the old modem router was faulty, so just purchased a modem and then used the modem in bridge mode then connect the router.
