Off to Hobart guys - any suggestions?

Hey Everybody,

I am off to Hobart with family next weekend. Please give me some suggestions on places not to be missed near Hobart / Port Arthur. I kow it'll be cold but that's what we would take time out for.

I am looking at Trip advisor and the other usual places , was wondering if there are any exceptionally value for money attractions / adventure activities.

Any suggestions welcome.

MONA, for sure. Nothing else like it in the country. https://www.facebook.com/MONAFOMA
They were running a competition offering free airfares but it may have finished…

It's your last chance to tell us what you do after dark, in exchange for a return Qantas flight to Hobart.
$100,000 worth of flights available. Entries close on Friday.

    • Thanks MONA looks interesting , will check it out.

Competition closed on the 3rd (http://www.lottos.com.au/competitions/viewthreadlite.php?tid…).

Mt Wellington - great views, free.
Salamanca Place - markets on Saturday, including local crafts.
      Richmond - 1800's village, free.
Have fish and chips on the waterfront at Dunalley on the way to/back from Pt Arthur.
MONA for sure. Some people are offended by some of the exhibits.
Tasmanian museum, free entry, just had a $30 million upgrade.

p.s. bring jumpers. have a great time!

    • MONA is very unique. Also the ferry ride there is nice.

Salamanca Market in Hobart is also nice. On every Saturday.

    1. If you have kids, and they haven't personally fed a kangaroo before, don't miss Bonorong Wildlife Park.
We've taken ours several times and they love it.

    2. If you're in Hobart on a Saturday morning, make sure you get down to Salamanca Market. Local arts and crafts; interesting sights, sounds, smells and tastes.

    3. Whether or not you go to MONA, if you enjoy wine the nearby Moorilla Winery is a must see http://www.moorilla.com.au/

    4. Food wise, the best Japanese is at Mikaku; the best Italian is at Maldini's; both in the Salamanca area. The best fish & chips in Australia is at Fish Frenzy on the wharf nearby.

  • And if you have a sweet tooth - a visit to the Cadbury Factory is worthwhile - mainly because you can blow some cash in the staff shop at the end of the tour… last time we went we took our car over on the ferry and brought back 20Kg of chocolate for around $100

  • I am not sure the Cadbury tours are still running.

I agree with the Salamanca suggestions above but include the newly refurbished Tasmanian Museum and art Gallery. It is free so you dont have to see everything but dont miss the Tasmanian Tiger exhibit room. Also there are some more galleries and restaurants on the other side of the dock around the Henry Jones Art Hotel.

Love the Trip advisor app and the website to add things to a trim and quickly save your sugesstions to my itinerary.

  • But wait! Look what I've just found on a BBC site: HIP HOBART. (It's mostly true)
