    Captive market with no alternatives.

Probably better value to fly then rent a car. No boat sickness. Quicker, so more time to look around.

      • Possibly. The people I know who have done it were taking a caravan or camper trailer for an extended holiday.

    $610??? whew! that is expensive!

  • So running a ship this size, in Australia should be cheap?

I've been on it before and it was pretty crappy. Everything on board is overpriced, and the interior is really dated. Flying back was a lot better, quicker and cheaper!

    • Exactly my experience.
      Next time we are flying.

  • how much is it minus the car each way though?

Because the car is subsidised it adds less than $90 to the cost each way. As already mentioned, flying one or two of your party would be a lot cheaper. Perhaps you could draw strawers, with the loser getting the boat and sleepless night.

        Lol

What a group did before me was they hired a cabin for only 2 people and 5 of them travelled in it. The other 3 had sitting seats.

  • should have crammed 2 people in the boot. paid for 1 car and 1 person.

  • Had the trip and came back , found a review that perfectly sums up my experience. I didn't have the option as I was taking a vehicle over so had to use it.

PS: there is a security check on the way, can't really cram people in, also the vehicle is not accessible during the travel so you'd be stuck in.

“Save time catch a flight, you'll be in Melbourne before you board the ferry.”
    Reviewed 7 June 2013 NEW
In the time that you wait in the queue to get on the boat, You could drive to the airport buy a ticket, get on a flight and land in Melbourne. You would be ready to catch a taxi for home by the time the ferry leaves.

Only choose this option if you have a vehicle to transfer, for all other purposes it is better in all ways to catch the flight.

Food, shopping or pretty much anything on the is very expensive onboard, the ferry ticket itself is pretty expensive, taking vehicles even more so, you really can't blame them, this is what happens always in a government granted Monopoly.

Rooms are nice clean and well maintained. No complaints about anything else.

The biggest frustration is the wait time to get onboard and get off board, what's worse is the lack of communication about how long the wait is and seemingly random manner of boarding,

They should have lines based on preferences, people who want to board early depart late / board early depart early or some logical system.

Currently it was a complete mess. Other than that no complaints
