Domain name renewals

My domain name is due for renewal. Does anyone know who is good to go through for renewals?

  • I'm not sure but I had problems in the past trying to move a domain when it was near expiry. You may find yourself having to renew with the current registrar then move on (but I'm not an expert so please have someone with better knowledge help you here - it just happened to me a few years ago).

All my domains are .com and I go with gandi.net (French). If I was to go with an Aussie I like the look of VentraIP. I have mates who use them and speak highly, cheap too.

    • I'm not aware of any problems transferring an .au domain near expiry. There is a period of 48 hours in which you won't be able to make any edits to the zone records while they are in transit to the new registrar.

+1 for ventraip service also. If you transfer to them within 90 days of expiry, they register your domain for free until it's up for renewal. I don't remember if this is ventraip policy or all AU registrars policy.

  • What kind of domain name? A gTLD like .com / .net / .org ? Or an Australian domain like .com.au?

VentraIP is certainly cheap, and service has been okay — most things are automated and some issues I had they had them sorted pretty quickly. Some of my personal domains are parked with Name.com but with their recent hacking incident which relates to potentially massive outbreaks (see HTP5) — I am thinking of moving the domains elsewhere.

Well. Where is safe though, when the registrar is specifically targeted by the hacker group?

    • -1

Mine is a com.au domain. Interesting that ventraip comes up. Googling seems like they sound pretty good.

  • +1 for VentraIP - They've been great to deal with and very affordable.

-1 Bazillion for MelbourneIT! Avoid them like the plague! Non-existent to horrible customer service at their best and they literally (not figuratively!) cost 10 to 20 times more than other registrars for the same domains. Plus if you adjust a DNS setting, you have a 50/50 chance of loosing ALL your settings everytime time you change something (good luck with customer service trying to fix it!)

    ****rant over****

Sorry about that! :) I promised MelbIT in their last customer survey that I would recommend to EVERYONE that no one ever ever ever use them again. :p

Best of luck with your renewal:)

  • I've always found net registry really good. Cheap and friends who have used their customer service say it is great, although I can't speak personally about that.

    Good luck.
