Electric kettle recommendations

Any recommendations as to which brand / type of electric kettle I should buy? Around the $70 mark.

I was considering the Kenwood kmix Jug Kettle, but read quite a few reviews which mentioned that it started coming apart after only about 6-8 months.

I'm not paying $70+ for something that lasts barely a year - I want it to last at least 5 years, and then for a few more after some minor surgery with electric / duct tape. ;)
I'm on ozbargain dammit!

    Get a stainless steel one otherwise , with regular use, a plastic one will mark, stain and look crappy after a few years.

    and one that sits on the charging plate stand i.e. don't get a kettle which you have to remove the plug/cable from it.

    i have a stainless steel russell hobs kettle that I've been using for the last 8 years with out a hiccup. got it as a wedding present. so definitely cheaper to just buy it yourself.

    this model is different to mine but for $41 delivered…

    I bought my mum a whisper quiet kettle from Myer. Cant remember the brand, but she loves it. It also has a high pitched bell that dings when boiled.
    Kettles seem to get more noisey with age, so if you want one that lasts 5 years, it'll probably sound like a freight train getting nearer (I'm looking at you Russell Hobbs.)

    @altomic. I've been through a few Russell Hobbs over the years, I think the quality has gone down. Sounds like you got one that - you know "they dont make them like they use to"

    I do like those new all glass kettles out now. A bit like a restaurant coffee pot.

      Maybe you should get a old made in Australia kettle. I haven't got one but if I did I'm sure it probably live on for ever seeing as everything back then was made to last.

    I am also looking for an electric kettle, but I want a stainless steel one which is stainless steel inside as well without any plastic bits. It appears BPA is an issue with plastic bits boiling in the kettle. The only one that is mentioned on the internet is http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach-40898-Cool-Touch-Cordle…. Any comments appreciated.

  • Hi Tonester, I checked the magimix kettle and it does have plastic inside the kettle.

    • where? iirc i never saw plastic inside when i checked out one once

  • Hi Tonester, I rang "Your Home Depot" who stock the Magimix and they checked and informed me there was plastic inside the kettle. I have noticed on the weekend that all the kettles I saw have some form of plastic in them now, whether it be the level indicator, the filter over the spout, or over the connections between the handle and the kettle. The only kettle I have been able to find which has only a plastic cover, is the Hamilton Beach Kettle 40898. Please let me know if there are any other models without plastic in the kettle being sold in Australia.

    Wow! Thanks for all your suggestions everyone.

    @Altomic — really appreciate the considered response. TBH, I had the same "don't make 'em like they used to" thoughts about the quality as @MITM, but wasn't able to sugar-coat it as well as s/he has done. :)

    @MITM — thanks for your help. :)

    @g1a2r3r4y5 — thanks.

    Must admit, hadn't even thought about the BPA thing — boiling hot water coming in contact with plastic… not my cup of tea. ;)

    Breville smart kettle can be had for around $100 for a good Ozbargainer, a bit more than your budget but offers temp control and an enamel finish which is easier to keep clean than stainless and more durable than plastic. My dad has one and its the best kettle I have used. Will get one when my old Breville dies which may be another decade.

  • I had a breville quiet boil kettle also SS, runs pretty good.

    Not sure how it compares to the rest, its been a year so far so good

    I have used many kettles over the years. Definitely go for metal. The plastic ones will ultimately warp and turn yellow, and last only a few years. I have a metal breville one and it is still in great condition. Ideally get one with a hidden element - less to clean.
