NSW ski fields on long weekend in Thredbo or Perisher?

Hi

Has anyone ever been to Thredbo or Perisher during the long weekend? I'm asking coz I'm thinking of going but not sure about the snow cover and how busy it'll be as well, or if it's worth giving it a miss. I usually go to thredbo. Any advice is appreciated.

  • It's good for the party atmosphere. Not worth going for skiing unless maybe if you are a never-ever.

If you had to go down, pick Perisher, it's higher and front valley is likely to be open. At this point, I expect thredbo to have a magic carpet with a couple metre wide ribbon of snow next to it open for the long weekend or maybe even just kosci chair open to foot passengers for snow-play.

  • ^ Yes, it's white, but it's not skiable. There is probably 10-15cm uncompacted snow around not in snowmaking areas.

As I said, between now and two weeks away there isn't much snow on the forecast and it's mostly warm (freezing level around 2000 meters). Let's see where that leaves us in two weeks time.

Perisher front valley is your best bet and will probably be the only skiing on offer in NSW. Thredbo will do valiantly to try to make snow on friday flat (at 1350 meters where it's too warm) and the snowline will retreat up to near the top part of the kosci chair.

    Not hating, just stating.

Wait til late june and get some more bang for your buck.

  • Hmm thanks for the advice. I was contemplating going coz it's a few days off work without annual leave but I might give it a miss now if it's only first timer runs and the snow is crap. Definitely not worth the drive down…
