Moved to Forum: Original Link

It appears that Amazons promise to open up their Android app store to over 200 countries including Australia has come to fruition, with Amazon updating their Android App today to add that additional support.

The Amazon App Store famously provides users with access to a free app every day. Every day a paid app becomes free.

The Amazon App store is not available from Google Play and must be downloaded from Amazon itself. You can head over to the Amazon App Store download page and download the APK. You will need to ensure that you have allowed sideloading of apps on your Android device before you try to install it, to do so go to Settings > Security > and ensure that ‘Unknown sources’ is ticked. Once you’ve downloaded the APK simply install it.

Access to the Amazon Android App store also requires an Amazon Account so you’ll need to sign up either on the Amazon website or you can do it from the front end of the application. As well as the Amazon mobile app you can search the Amazon Appstore for Android on the Amazon website in your browser.

You can check back every day for a new application. This is a great way to get access to new applications

Every day a paid app becomes free.

A lot of people have been using it, but we had to create a US alias before. I had a few alias block before because it was not available for australia.

  • anyone else think it's dodgey it's a. Not on the Play Store and b. It makes you select install from Unknown sources? I can see it's from www.amazon.com I guess

Not sure why its not on the play store. but its an alternative to the play store. maybe google don't want competition to their play store.

you have to select unknown source because its not from the playstore

As long as you're getting the APK from a reputable source, there is nothing wrong with allowing installation from unknown sources, which was originally a developer option (under developer setting pre-ICS, and security from ICS onwards).

Android app development scene is not limited to what's avaiable on the Play store, there are plenty of methods/places to download/install standalone APK without the intervention of google Play. Samsung Store, Lg Smart World, AND Amazon Store to name a few. Heck, if you want, you could root your device, get rid of Play store all together, and look elsewhere for all your apps. Is there a risk involved? Yes. But that does not make it any less legit. Though I am not encouraging people to look at the plethora of pirated APK floating all over the internet.

And if that does not convince you, just look up all the Amazon App Store deals we've had on OzB, I've lost count…

As for it not been on the Play store, pretty sure there a clause in Google T&C that forbids other App Store form apps from been released on Play. Most likely, as said, to limit competition.
