Cheap ticket to Europe?

I'm planning on going backpacking through europe soon and I'm in need of a ticket! I don't really mind where I land, I can basically start a loop from anywhere! Germany or UK would be preferable in late Sept./early Oct (I want to experience oktoberfest).

So far I haven't been finding many super cheap fares, but who knows what the power of OzBargain can do!

I don't mind who I fly with, as long as they are genuine and reasonably reputable.

If it's just one way into one country and then the return leg is separate from a different city that is OK, but I'm planning on a kind of loop around Europe (very, very rough picture: http://puu.sh/30dXQ.jpg) so if the return leg is back near where I first arrive that'd be even better.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks :)

Edit: I should add this is from Syd/Mel

When will you be coming back? What is the cheapest you have found so far?

    We need more details son

  • I'm also planning to go backpacking from early August to early November.
It seems China Southern Airlines provide one of the cheapest flights though I don't know how reputable they are.
These the are the cheapest flights I've found so far:

I have flown with them (China Southern) from Melbourne to Paris, via Beijing and return. Overall it was OK. I mean for the price you can not complain. They do have some waiting time in between flights, however a hotel in Beijing pretty cheap. We had some trouble with customer service, they do not speak the best English. But you will get by for sure. I would fly again.

If you take China Southern and have a long transit in Guangzhou (over 6 hours), the airline offers free overnight accommodation and transfers: http://www.csair.com/en/tourguide/airport_service/airports_i… (Commitment Nine. It's best to email them beforehand). The accommodation is basic but there's nothing wrong with it. The service doesn't work well when the flight to Guangzhou is delayed past ~midnight; transit staff don't seem to hang around and wait for these passengers.

The planes flying between Australia and China are reasonably new but don't tend to have in-flight entertainment, whereas the ones between China and Europe may (look for flights on the A380, they will be the most comfortable)

    • Thanks for the info guys.
Has anyone flown/have anything to say about Vietnam Airlines?

        Rubbish, don't do it.

  • Sorry for the lack of info, I posted this at 4am.

I've kinda revised what I plan on doing: Flying into somewhere around germany around the 25th of September (between the 23rd and 4th october preferably, for Oktoberfest). I was thinking of maybe flying into Paris, but if I have to fly into London that is fine. The tour I plan on booking leaves on the 19th of October, so the return flight will have to be around november 11/12 (but later is ok, I'm fully flexible to find a cheaper fare!).

The cheapest I could find was $1317 with Vietnam airlines into paris, but I have no idea how good/bad they are or if that's a good price. Also China Southern had it for $1335, but the return leg is 10 hours shorter (I'd probably pay the extra $18 if its a similar airline just to save 10 hours).

Edit: China southern into Amsterdam seems to be even cheaper, $1313.

Can get you $1440 into AMS with KLM (far better airline than China or Vietnam) which is a one stopper around 22hrs both ways.

Or a far more convoluted way doing MEL-SIN return with Qantas for $550 then SIN-AMS return with Saudia for $600 - Total $1150

      • Just checked KLMs website, not sure where these numbers are coming from. I am getting 1640 at cheapest, and usually around 1840

      • how the hell did you find $600 from sin to ams? what dates are you travelling?
