Any helpful information in planning a trip to Tasmania in mid Jan 2014 ?

I am planning to go to Tasmania in Jan next year with couple of my friends and their families. We are going with 2 cars (7 and 8 seaters) in Spirit of Tasmania. We will spend 7 nights over there. We have 2 small kids as well so we won't be doing any camping and staying in Maria Island is not possible. We have never been to Tassie before. So any help with information on the places to visit, good/reasonably priced places to stay would be appreciated.

What ever you do - avoid the mania. I know I did.

The boat is quite expensive, and not that comfortable. you might be able to find airfares that are considerably cheaper, and just two of you go accross with the cars, then pick the others up from the airport? You'll have 2 less sea-sick, grumpy kids to contend with at the very least.

    • We actually booked the flights for all of of us which was very cheap compared to ferry. Then we realised we have to pay a huge money for 2 7 seaters on rent. So 2 of us just forgot about the money already spent for Jetstar booking and booked the ferry with cars. However on our return trip we all are coming on the ferry which was already booked but at least 6-7 times more expensive than the flight.

With two small kids you might enjoy to go to Tazmazia http://www.tasmazia.com.au/ It's fairly cheap, rather odd but good family fun set in the beautiful foothills of Shefeild which is around an hour form Devonport. If you head to Launceston you should check out the Cataract Gorge http://www.launcestoncataractgorge.com.au.

    • Thank you very much for this valuable information. I didn't know about this place and the search on top places to visit in Tassie didn't give this one but the kids will sure love this place.

go check out the tripadvisor forum for tasmania - its quite active.

Although its best to read the travel info, and then ask the questions. So you have the basics covered.

Lovely time of the year btw, but it will be busy so booking ahead on accomodation would be needed I think.

  • Take some food with you, couple of sandwiches or something, the buffet is a massive rip. I think it was nearly $20 for a once only fill, kids were about $15.
Stanley is probably one of the best places to visit. Climb the nut or get the chair lift up and walk through some beautiful gardens, then look out to the Bass straight, awesome!
The cabins down near the beach are first class with an IGA within a 2 min walk.
In town there are few historical shops to browse through and fresh seafood near the wharf.

  • Thanks for the information so far. Yes TripAdvisor web site helps but regarding accommodation I might only find helpful information when I am not on budget but just looking for good places to stay. OZB is a better place to find information on saving and having the trip on budget.
We have already booked flights and ferry. We have 7 nights to stay there. So we can go entire east side and from Hobart to Devonport without touching much of West side. Now need to find some good accommodation where we all can stay together. All together we have 13 in the group. 8 adults and 2, 3 yr olds and 3 of 5-6 year olds. If we can find a house with multiple rooms for 2-3 days in both Hobart and Launceston it'll be good and save money. Any suggestions?

  • When we book for 7 nights in Tassie starting the trip from Hobart and ending in Devonport catching the Ferry on the last night, which area we need to book more days. In Hobart or in Launceston side. A friend said most places to visit are around Hobart and within 1.5 hours drive from there.
When we are not after camping or walking as we have little ones, is this true? So that we can book more days in Hobart.
