SYD to LAX Return

Hiya group!

Every time I travel I never seem to get a deal and always feel like the price I was given is at full blown fare.

I was wondering if anyone knows a bit of tricks/tips or knows of any current deals.

Leave 17th June and return 5th August. The best I have found is about $1900 with V Australia.

Also would prefer direct flight unless the stop over is short.

Thanks!!

  • You can save a couple hundred dollars by flying through Fiji or Taipei, http://matrix.itasoftware.com

If you shift your days +/- 1 day, you can get it down to $1600.

Unfortunately, you are flying in peak time.

  • Try this. http://matrix.itasoftware.com/

Generally, there aren't much price difference if the flight you want is within 1 month out. Unless of course you run into a last minute sale from an airline. I would guestimate that you should still be able to save some shopping money if you shop around for your tickets.

For myself, I booked my last year's December holiday in July, which is considered late, because I wanted to see what Scoot had to offer after they opened up bookings for November and beyond. Prior to July, all they had was bookings up to end of Oct 2012. This year, I have already sorted my December holidays when someone posted the deal from expedia.com.br previously.

Hope this helps. Happy travelling. :)

    • Doh.. Neil beat me by 5 mins. :)

You are flying in the peak USA summer school holiday period unfortunately, so there aren't likely to be many deals.

I usually fly to the USA mainland via Hawaii when I go, as you can often get cheap Honolulu flights on Jetstar etc. Plus you have the added benefit of going through customs in HNL and not LAX, but you aren't likely to get a cheap domestic flight within the USA at the time you are going, so that probably isn't much help.

    Have fun in America anyway!

  • Haha damnit, oh well I'll keep looking around.

Jetstar was an option, but I struggle on domestic flights with Jetstar with leg room as I'm ridiculously tall so not sure I can hack it all the way to Hawaii lol.

    Thanks for everyones help!

International flights on Jetstar use an Airbus A330 (much bigger planes than the A320's they use), so maybe there is more legroom etc. Just a thought.

      • I'll have a look into it, thanks!

      • This is true. It's not the best legroom compared to some other international airlines but it's better than their domestic product. Check seatguru.com for seat specs of all aircraft.

  • Try Zuji, prices around $1600

    • Yeah. Through Taipei. Adds a bit to the flight and stopover. Good if you want to spend a night or 2 there.

  • Matrix is great for searching most airlines but not Cathay Pacific- a search on the Cathay website shows that there are sale flights for $1650 if you fly 16 June/5 August. There's a short stopover on the way there but a 5 hour stopover on the way back.

I am flying from SYD to JFK (stop over in LAX) on wednesday 05/06/13, we paid $1600 per person. booked it with Delta, used the Sky Scanner app for my iphone and found it. I know this is to New york but i would imagine (maybe wrongly) that u should be able to get it cheaper… good luck. Sky scanner app is awesome, if u dont have an iphone im pretty sure they have a website!

Edit I actually paid $1321 booked 6 months ago, just looked on the app for the same flights if i book now and they are $1472. not bad for last min.

Incorrect. There is a stopover in Incheon, South Korea.

If you are prepared for a slightly longer flight you can fly to Auckland, then fly virgin AKL to LAX.

Cost $NZ3427.42 on days you want to fly. Plus cost of 1 way to NZ. approx $A2850 for 2 tickets, plus 2 tickets to NZ vs the $A3800 you are paying now. You fly back to Sydney with Virgin, then pick up your "original flights" Its Virgins pricing strategy…. they need to compete with AirNZ direct flights to LAX, and offer a cheaper option for the extra flight time.

Arrange for a stop over in Sydney on way back. Then you can either forfeit the last leg - Sydney to Akl. Or use it a few months later and take a weekend to NZ, buying only a return ticket.

While you are adding to your flight over times, you wont have any extra time flying back. This vs the Korean, Shanghai, Hong Kong etc options which involve long flight times both ways.

But as the others have said, you are going at the high demand time with our School hols and US summer break.

  • Try putting up a short contest on flightfox.com Might cost you $30
Never know your luck what someone may come up with.

Try looking up 2 return flights.
Instead of 1 return flight A to B (via Y) and back.
Go A to Y and back plus Y to B and back.
    Eg syd-hnl-syd (intl/Jetstar) plus hnl-lax-hnl(dom/delta,united,Hawaiian,southwest-vacations)
    syd-nad-syd plus nad-lax-nad
    bne-
    mlb-

Try ifly.net.au - good for moving dates +/-
