Will an old modem with a new router impact speed?

Ive got an old Siemens Speedstream 4200 modem. Wondering whether i should toss it or not. If I connect it to a new wireless router, will I still get the most out of the connection, or will the age of the modem impact the speed?

Does a standalone modem have any impact on speed (ie adsl vs adsl2+), or is it all done in the router?

Yes it will if it doesn't play nice with the ADSL connection. In particular you need an ADSL2 modem to get ADSL2 speeds. Also older modems may be less tolerant of poorer line quality.

  • depends how its setup

i use a few routers and as they're not bridged, they have no bearing on line speed

  • FWIW, I have a Speedstream 4200 connected to my Linksys E3000…this setup works like a champion! :)

  • Hmmm, ok I might hold onto it then, cheers for the input guys.
