Android mobile for around $400

Hi guys,

for weeks (if not Months) now I'm looking for a new phone. I definitely would like a Android one and the price tag should be around $400.

I got my missue the Motorola Razr when it was on special at JB (I think it was about $289). I quite like the phone but haven't used it very much except setting it up for her.

With this price tag, the Nexus 4 is an obvious candidate. Is it still worth getting a Nexus 4? Or would it make sense to wait for a new one?

What Nexus 4 alternatives are out there?

Cheers,

EDIT: I'm with Vaya so the HTC ONE X from their current promo sounds alright. Any comments on that one?

  • Why not the S3 from Vaya then?

Nexus 4 is still a good buy, or if you could wait, N5 should be out by October imo to coincide with the 5th anniversary of Andoid OS

      • No LG nexus, but that doesn't mean there won't be another Nexus model made by other manufacturers. Once Keylime Pie 5.x is released, Google will need a device to showcase the Vanilla version, and that's where Nexus 5 come in. And what better time to show off Keylime Pie 5.x on Nexus 5 device then the 5th anniversary of the OS.

  • What about the this one? http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/lg-optimus-4x-hd-p880-black-andr…

Would save me even more money.

  • Thanks for the replies so far.
    I simply can't decide.
Spend a bit more and get http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/lg-optimus-g-e975-4g-32gb-black/ or go cheaper with the P880 and do the CM10.1 …
Any comments on the Optimus G?

      Don't like the Nexus 4 or S3?

I'd get either the Optimus G or Nexus 4 as they have the best cpu and gpu. Nexus 4 although fragile does have the latest android and will get updates the longest.

      • I'm using a Nexus 4 and very happy with it. The 16GB version is just under $400. Just need to get a cheap rubber casing for it ;)

They are essentially the same phone. What it comes down to in the end is whether you prefer the vanilla android experience on N4 and enjoy faster updates; or 32gb internal rom of Optimus G, which also has LTE enabled.

AFAIK the Optimus G from Kogan is the E975K model, which runs 3G off 850MHz/2100MHz. Which means that it may not be a viable solution for you if you're with Optus.

Oh really? Wow, didnt even realise that. As said above, I'm with Vaya (Optus), so I can't use the E975 on the Optus network? That would obviously be a deal breaker.

      PS: I live in Brisbane.

Well not entirely. 900 covers rural & regional areas, and 2100 metro. Depend on where you live, not having 900mhz may not be a problem.

        Check Optus 3G coverage here:
        http://www2.optus.com.au

Select 3G single band. Yellow = 3G 2100, green = GSM. If you're within the yellow zone, then there's no real worries.

        From the LG website tech;
        http://www.lg.com/au/mobile-phones/lg-Optimus-G-E975K

        •4G 1800/2600MHz
        •3G HSDPA 42Mbps 850/2100MHz
        •2G 850/900/1800/1900MHz

So 4G will work since all LTE in Aus currently run on 1800, and in areas without 2100 coverage, you'll lose 3G, but should still be able to make and receive calls since 2G still works over 900.

        • Thanks iChopstick,
That makes it now much clearer. I should be fine with the LG.

          Cheers,
