Need a Desktop PC with a budget of $500

Hi guys,

I need some help :)

I need to buy a pc for my son and have a budget of $500, do not need monitor, keyboard/mouse, speakers as we have all those.

I know the best option is to buy the parts and have it built, but I'm not that cluey on all that lol..So any help would be great!..

Basically it is going to be used for internet, homework, games, he plays WOW so something that will run that well. If anyone has any ideas on where to buy one, or some help on getting one built for me it would be really appreciated…

thanks again

Tash

  • i know nothing really about computers, but i keep hearing eee pc.

zazz has it today for $365 shipped.
if someone knowledgeable on computers and its pricing can tell if that is a good price, it might help you.

not sure about performance of the computer, or if its all style.

    www.zazz.com.au

16" monitor might be worth the extra $110

  • I would be surprised if you can run WOW on a eebox.
Check to see if MSY or UMart are in ur state.

For that budget, your best options is to get one of them to build you a PC. Try asking the guys at the hwirlpool forum to help you with the specs. but here is something which might work :

    CASE: Thermaltake Wing RS100 Midi Tower Black(with 430W PSU) : $95
    CPU : AMD Athlon? 64 5000+AM2 Processor Retail Dual Core AM2 : $95
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-M61PME-S2P AM2 MB GF6100/nF430 DDR2 800 : $93
Memory: Corsair 2GB (Single Stick) Value Select PC-5300 (667MHz): $45.00
Video card : Sapphire HD2400XT 256MB DDR3 : $46 (should be able to run wow)
    Vista Home: $156

    Total : $430

They will install everything for you for an additional $100.

    • other option try ebay for an older pc. Also with the new mac mini out today you might be able to get your hands on an older refurbished model for about $500

  • Have a look on Whirlpool.net.au in their forums (I think links to Whirplool are banned so I wont post one.)
There are heaps of people who ask this question and Whirlpool is filled with gamers..
Do a search first to ensure noone has already asked in the past month or so..
The MSY suggestion is a good one..as is buying used and upgrading as required. If your son is a gamer have you given this to him as a project? He should know what he needs for the game and you've set the budget.
If it will run the game it will do everything else just fine!

  • Yeah you can go to one of the stores such as MSY or ITEstate or even ARC (they seem fairly good with service) to get a price on a build that would suit your needs. MSY and ITEstate are fairly busy so service can be hit or miss but in my experience ARC charge a little more but can build a computer to your needs.

If worse comes to worse, give me a yell, I've got a really hot PC/Desktop I'm going to sell. I've kept all invoices and it's definitely packing a wallop.

  • Watch ebay. As an example, see item 180332915098. Reasonable gaming PC for $390. Not high end, but ok motherboard and video card. I know you only want the box, and that example is Brisbane pickup only. But an example of what comes up.
