Need an Android Phone < $100

Not sure if this belongs here or in the "Find me a bargain", it fits in both but please move if needed.

Okay, my other half's SG1 died yesterday and we need to find a cheap replacement as a stop-gap for a month or so, at which time I'll probably buy her a SG3 or similar.

With our needs in mind, I want to spend less than $100, and TBH closer to $50 would be fantastic. Brand doesn't matter at all, needs to be Optus network friendly. Prefer some cheap new phone than a second hander which is what she has now.

Any thoughts? Deals I may have missed? Obviously ordering from O/S is not really possible since she's going bonkers NOW without a phone, the sooner I get her a phone the more relaxed everyone will be :)

  • if it's just for a month what about something like this

    This runs android

There are a few other clearance DSE android phones so you may want to check what's in store at your local DSE

    • The specifications on the Huawei mentions 2g networks only. It's possible that phone may not support 3g.

Anyway if it were still available, the Huawei G300+ at $99 via Officeworks and TArget would've been perfect however you've missed that deal for a while now. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/104420

If the Huawei Ascend y201 Telstra prepaid is still available for $39.99 at Coles it is unbeatable for your needs. Use bagman on these forums will unlock for $5.
I think I saw a poster near the Coles checkout earlier this week saying it was still $40 (but I could be mistaken). Might be worth calling your local Coles that is open late as if they were still on special it will end tonight.

    • yeah still $40, totally worthwhile . I used it as a temporary until my new phone came and got it unloaded by bagman, cheap and easy :) Pretty snazzy phone for $40, seeing as I used to buy prepaid phones in the 2000s for $200-300 each and cant even compare tho this (j210i, K750i, W200i, W910i, X1, RAZR, Secret etc). To think of all the money i could have saved or used elsewhere :(

  • Wow thanks guys!

    Some great suggestions here.

To be perfectly honest, all are worthwhile including the $29 Samsung… That was until I saw the $39 (+5) Huawei Ascend y201, I did remember seeing that but the "Telstra" wording put me off. If unlock is so easy then this will be perfect!

And whilst the 2G comment was probably for the Huawei g7500, for ~1month she is not going to care if she's stuck on 2G, as long as she has a reliable phone.

I'm going to check out the Huawei Ascend y201 now.

To all who replied, mucho appreciado!

  • Okay I picked up the Huawei Ascend y201 today. Apparently the $39.50 1/2 price special had ended by the time I got there but she told me she'd still honour it since nobody had removed the 1/2 ticket yet. So that was nice of her.

I guess I just miss out on the 1000 flybuy points but I can live with that.

Now off to purchase my unlock from bagman.

Haven't even opened it yet but I think for this price, it'll make an excellent spare phone should we need one down the track.

    4" Huawei G300+ (Vodafone, single-core, ICS, 850/900/2100) is $99 at DSE
    4" Huawei Y300 (Telstra, dual-core, JB, 850/2100) is $129 at DSE

'bagman' can unlock both for a few bucks. The Y300 is the superior phone however G300+ better if need the Optus 900Mhz frequency or just want to save $30.

If want the cheapest phone then the $39.50 3.5" (yuck.. 320x480) Huawei Y201 at Coles would be the best bet.

    • its a temporary phone until the s3 arrives, whats wrong with the y201?
