Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ40: Is $330 currently the best price (Georges)?

I want to buy this camera so that it gets delivered before the end of this month as I intend to gift this to an overseas friend. So, any warranty is irrelevant unless it is international.

I will be flying out of the country to meet him and will be able to claim GST while leaving. So, that is something to factor in while comparing prices.

I have searched StaticIce, ShopBot and GetPrice. Even though a few online stores are selling it cheaper, if shipping is factored in, the $330.00 that is offered by Georges turns out to be the cheapest.

I will be able to use my ING Visa, so will be able save some money if they accept Contactless cards. Does anybody else have a better idea than haggling at the store for a better price?

JB Hi-Fi and Bing Lee do have it for $349.00. Do you think any of these would be able to beat Georges? Or would I just be wasting my time?

Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I am based in Sydney.

If you go to Georges, ask for Fadi, I had previously been buying cameras there for years, and always got a good deal off him (I'm sure he's still there because I saw him opening the store the other day).

JB and Bing Lee should both have no issue matching the price, though YMMV with beating that price depending on the sales rep you get - nothing that a bit of sweet talking won't take care of though. Even if you only manage a price match at JB, I think they have pay wave so you should be able to get another 5% cashback, and the GST you claim at the airport will be the full amount on the JB invoice, so you get a few $$ extra.

Alternatively, buy up cheap JB gift cards (with a greater than 5% discount on face value) and pay with those once you get them to price match. See here for one where $100 card is going for $70 due to quick expiry (of course be careful not to get ripped off, best to take theseller in store with the card to check): http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-sydney/jb+hifi+gift/k0l3003435

THe older model TZ30, which I have, is $287 with Welcome10 code at DJs, but no GST back so works out same price as the current TZ40.

Interestingly Myer currently has teh TZ40 for $349 as well, and usually they have no issue price matching either.

My suggestion would be pick up some cheaper myer gift cards, then get them to price match. That way you can pick up myerone points as well!

    • Wow! That is really good info. Thanks for taking the time, ccrap.

Good spotting on the Myer price. I know that they price match quiet easily and if not anything else, I'll get a few Myer One points.

Most of all, thanks for pointing out the cheap JB Hi-Fi card. Do you know if other places where I can get gift cards at a discount of >5%?

BTW, why do you say no GST at DJs? Is it because it is <$300?

  • No worries, glad to be of help.

Umm most places you'll only be able to get 5% off the myer gift cards, and on ebay myer giftcards often go for close to face value or sometimes even more! (because of money laundering I guess). If myer take paywave just use that, otherwise, if you have some time on your hands, then scour through sites like gumtree and sometimes you might find a good one - as always TAKE CARE and make sure you dont get duped with the gift cards from other people.

Some example cheap ones on gumtree are:

$70 for a $100 card, again with short expiry: http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/ryde/miscellaneous-goods/-100…

    $35 for a $50 card: http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/alexandria/mobile-phones/-50-…

And yes, I said no GST above because it was below $300, not because it was DJs :)

    $450 for $500 card: http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/kingsford/miscellaneous-goods…

I just used the search term Myer Gift Card, so shouldn't be too hard to dig up a few more if you want to go down that path.

    • Thanks a ton for "buy gift cards from gumtree" info. I manage to pick a $50 JB Hi-Fi card for $30.

Since my friend said we really only wanted a basic point-n-shoot, I ended up getting the Cannon A4000IS. Paid the rest using my ING. So, the camera effectively costed me only $94.60. A discount of 20%. Excellent savings by any means. :)

  • Hey everyone i just got given this camera for my bday yesterday but I don't need it. I have the receipt from JB HIFI and can sell iton ebay but would be happy to sell it to one of you guys. Nothing dodgy here I just have another camera that I use. I'm in hawthorn Victoria. Private message me if interested!
